Better a leader system than a gate with no key though RM - Sam's example of Bagshawe (as you know ) places access gates to some very sensitive, yet easily accessible areas bang next to the main drag that is open to all and sundry whether they be 'proper' cavers, or those less informed individuals who are there with an instructor, and not necessarily because they want to be.
I personally thought that St. Cuthbert's was great with a leader - we may have struggled to do such a varied and inclusive trip otherwise, due to routefinding complexity. As visitors to the area it just made it a better trip. Shame there was no guide for us in Swildon's on the previous day
