Caving Club Tax

I realise that most caving clubs are too small to be bothered by the Tax man but has any club ever had to pay tax on anything other than bank deposit interest?
Most club activities are obviously exempt.
I dont think this forum is the place for the discussion on taxation, so if anyone has useful unformation please can you PM me.

Why not? If the issues might affect and inform lots of clubs then surely this is the obvious place.

Er,... I'm kinda guessin' that people suspect some clubs that are liable to pay tax may be failing to do so and are thus at risk* of legal redress being taken against them. If so, surely informing clubs of how simple it is to fulfill their legal obligations would be a worthy thing for this forum to engage in.

* Albeit minor.

So ignore the bloody thread. There are enough other threads for you to play with

If a tax return arrived at peak district club, it would be screwed up and used as kindling in the stove....

...might I suggest the Southern clubs adopt the same procedure.... ;) ;) (write it into the club constitution and vote on it if necessary  :tease: )

The tax man is far too busy chasing Albanians for ?1 million VAT frauds rather than a caving club for ?24.95 in subs

Subs are exempt. Also, it would be a brave club indeed that hard-wired illegality into its constitution, surely?

Firstly, Chris is right about subs and secondly, if the demand actually arroived then it would demonstrate that they'd got bored with Albanians & fancied chasing something easier.

Now, speaking purely for the club for which I am Treasurer, we get several hundred pounds back from the tax man every year so  :tease: to the Peak District clubs.

It's simple, for us. We are, as an affiliate of a charitable organisation (the university), able to Gift Aid subscriptions from our tax paying (i.e. not the bloody students) members.

We have done this for very many years but, credit where it's due, that nice Mr Brown has made it both easier and more lucrative.

I thought that this sort of thing provided the bulk of The Eldon constitution?

We (BPC) had an almost year-long 'discussion' with the tax man regarding paying tax on our income.

We won though

Im intregued (although am not sure how to spell it...), so for any tax paying member of a student club the club can claim the gift aid on their membership subscription?

How, may i ask, would you go about claiming that back?

I wouldn't say any club could do it. We have enough stuff going for us to hitch a ride on an educational establishment as having educational benefits ourselves, down to our publications, museum, etc etc.

if you reckon you could hack it, then have a word with the Uni finance office & talk about their relationship with the Inland Revenue. That's how ours was originally set up.

As far as I'm aware, Gift Aid is only available on donations. Payments in exchange for something, such as membership, raffle tickets, merchandise etc are not eligible. I hope you don't get audited...

It's not as simple as that, there are rules about proportionate cost. Anyway, we've been doing it for more than thirty years and, when covenants became gift aids I discussed it with the IR & they are happy with what we do.

Unlike the Eldon (allegedly) I reckon the best way to do things is to talk directly to the relevant authorities whenever you need to know stuff.
