Giants Fatality

Whew,

I go away for a few days and this happens.

My thoughts and condolences to the families concerned.

To the rest of you back off a bit and let it be before deciding rightly/wrongly.

As somebody who had a recent bereavement having a load of folk chopsing about what happened on an anonymous internet forum would push me over the edge and make my blood boil.

Not sure I like this attitude very much. What gives you the divine right to tell other folk what they should do?

Have you considered seeking professional advice to help you deal with your anger management issues?

Only thinking !!
But would a dry traverse route to the right hand side of Garlands over to the ledge that leads to Chert Hall (going down stream) help in very wet conditions, such as when this sad fatality occurred

I've done this once when someone forgot to drop our ladder down the pitch when leaving.
It would be a serious undertaking if you were tired.
And if permanently rigged with a wire, I think that you would have more incidents with people not using cow's tails and falling off.
Perhaps, placing a series of bolts (as for the first pitch in P8) where they could be used to protect the first with rope (or all) across might be an acceptable alternative?

I also agree with Pitlamp and Andy Sparrow that it is always best to err on the side of caution if in the slightest doubt with regard to the danger of flooding. Don't insist on descending flood-prone systems in dubious weather conditions just because you have your heart set on that particular trip, even if you have travelled a considerable distance. The cave will always be there another day whereas you may not be if you make the wrong decision.

Discretion is always the better side of valour.

The traverse round the right hand wall of garland is still reasonable easy to protect. It has a couple of naturals and even a p bolt(i think at the crabwalk end). I do agree maybe a few more could be added to make it easier.

As for the rescue the team were reasonably well equipped so why the fatality happen is quite a mystery. I think it is best to wait for the inquest at which point more facts will be know rather than speculation.
