This is interesting. (maybe it should be in a new thread). What are the dimensions of the squeeze box? I think I should fit. Am I unusual that my ass is bigger than my chest - well I like to think it is my large man tackle that is the problem  :-[

The down side of being a well 'ard caver?

I think it's the downside of being in the USA too long. Too many doughnuts Andy????

I have heard a comment, from someone who has not been to a Hidden Earth, but who has attended NAMHO conferences, that he would probably attend if there was a programme of field trips.
I feel this is missing the point of Hidden Earth.
If you also have not consider attending because you feel it is all a bit armchairy (new adj.) then I think you are missing the point of the event.
I see it as an event where the famous, notorious, young, old, active, armchair, academic, sport-caver, mine historian, can all meet on equal terms, learn off each other, feel the 'buzz', discuss issues, be entertained, informed, surprised etc etc. It's like an annual refuelling. It makes you want to get out there and do things together. In fact, its sort of like a real live human contact version of UKCaving. Field trips are just not what it's all about.

Depends whether you pitch your draughty tent in a muddy spot, it rains, and you opt for the cave diving intro in the school swimming pool, I suppose.

Surely it's not that bad, is it?

Field trips are just not what it's all about.

Ah, yes, I can see there'd be a similarity then. ;)

Oh dear! I feel some bad karma coming my way.

It's like the 60s, Derek. You had to be there to understand it. But you are probably too young to understand.

Hah! I was too OLD to understand the 60's IN the 60's.

Ah, a grumpy old git who doesn't understand the younger generation, then.  ;)

Just out of interest, from someone who is unable to get to Hidden Earth, do any of the lectures given ever get published in any shape or form?

I am hoping to get Goon's talk from the Churchill meeting sometime which was something of a classic. Perhaps Les should think about podcasting the sessions.

Peter Burgess has hit the nail on the head with his summing up of HE. I took my daughters for the first time and they thought it was a great weekend.  It's my annual chance to chat to people I don't see from one year to the next. I love caving for that reason you get far more continuity than in my other hobbies such as diving because only the diehards turn up for Hidden Earth. Most divers are in love with their computers and their kit as far as I can tell (I am not referring to cave divers who are a breed apart).

Fades muttering into distance.........

Unfortunately the nature my (and Anne's) work preclude us from coming (or going) to Hidden Earth, much as we'd like to. However, when we've unloaded our cows in 5 years time we'll be there!

No, a grumpy old git who understands them only too well.  :ras:

Actually I exaggerated my age a little, I wasn't really 30 in 1963 !

Thought I might share some HE photos with you all. They are not brilliant but I hope to have mastered the bloody camera by next years event.

An ISSA caver asks Mr Fell if he has seen his camera.

Walrus & Known by None get a lecture from Peter Burgess on the finer points of being pedantic.

Snab passes on the benefits of transferring your savings to an ISA to Barry Hulatt.

And Mr Fell too.

Barry decides enough is enough and livens the procedings up with some music..........without an instrument.

Me introduced to a member of the invisible caving club.

I'm a bit annoyed that I forgot to take my camera to the Stomp. Could have got some good pictures there.
Anyone got anymore to share with us? Someone must have some to give us a laugh.

Awesome pics mate! It was just like talking to Peter on the forum except (as shown in the picture) he was using his hands to emulate smileys.
If you look hard you can clearly see how uncanny my resemblance with gnomes really is!  (y)

I don't know why but these are probably the only 'beardy' people who I cave with. It's just a coincidence they are the majority of cavers I photographed.
Could make an interesting poll. Beard or non-beard. Has that one been done before?
;)
