i had to laugh at this one...
Q:  Would you consider doing a swap for two genuine Mendip gates. One from Upper Flood and another from the Charterhouse region??
A:  Sounds a fair exchange

Just had the police call on me about some cave gates.  I was able to show them my gates that I had on fleabay and they agreed that these were not the one in question.

Now, who was the toe rag that gave them my name and address?

The police also mentioned that the owner Peter Jones is tamping and they  would not be suprised if he closed the cave.

No, they were from the Gwent police.  Looked about 16 with a nice Range Rover

Quoting PDCMG Sec.:

We are fortunate that for the moment at least access to the cave remains unchanged. This means that if you are a keyholder please continue to use the Draenen original entrance as usual and as per the exisiting access agreement and conditions. [...] continue to take your key so that if you do meet the landowner you can show that you have permission to be there. Please do not use Drws Cefn or undertake through trips. This will not help the access situation.

I would suggest that you verify the access situation with the PDCMG permit secretary before visiting.

Hmm. Seems to be a different ebay page than the earlier one.

Did Plod really come to your house over an Ebay auction Tony ? Makes you think about what you post on a public forum/website and who looks at it doesn't it.

Robin

Yes, they really did.  Cannot believe that Gwent police have nothing better to do than drive all over South Wales feeling the collars of retired cavers.

Which they wouldn't have done if you had resisted the temptation to join the "idiots". Don't blame the police for following up something that you provoked yourself. Or perhaps you are just starting yet another wind-up. I trust you got a good b*llocking.

There's no need to think! It sometimes amazes me what some people actually post on forums expecting that landowners, etc. will never see it. Probably never heard of Google...

Can't see why plod would consider an old bloke in a wheelchair capable of nicking gates, he may be guilty of plagarism but thats all.  :-\

That's a lesson each of us has to learn the hard way. Lord knows I did, many years ago, in quite spectacular style.

The police wouldn't know that until they'd visited him, would they? The fact is, by putting up a spoof auction on eBay, Mr. Oldham implicated himself in the investigation and there was no way that they could then not visit him. The police are clearly following up all leads and seem to be doing a thorough job. They have to establish the facts and gather evidentiary proof for the case they are building. If Mr. Oldham has nothing to hide, then he will be ruled out of the investigation by now so all well and good. I would expect that the police have a strong hunch who the guilt party(s) is(are), but possible alternatives need to be ruled out.

If I were implicated in this, I would certainly be sweating right now. I'd also want to make sure that the stolen property was returned as soon as possible, to lessen the impact of any consequences.

Yeah, there's so little going on that the police can find time to get involved in a childish access dispute between cavers!
I'm sure there are no thefts, muggings, assaults, etc etc etc in South Wales they'd be better off investigating!

Yes, Jason there probably are. Which is why an obligation on their part to follow up a reported crime like this is a waste of good police resources. The "idiots" are just costing the taxpayer more of the council tax payers' hard-earned money, while more serious issues receive less attention.

It's a disgrace that they will follow up a nonsense case like this, yet they did not even come to my house when I reported that my shed had been broken into and a load of kit nicked. I sincerely hope that this is just an Oldham wind-up.

No. it's a disgrace that they didn't follow up your break-in, but it is certainly not a disgrace when plod actually do follow up a theft.

If indeed it isn't just another Oldham "joke".
