• Descent 302 is published on 15 February and it will soon be on its way to our subscribers.

In the newsdesk, read a review of the underground events at Kendal Mountain Festival, plus tales of cannibalism and the Cavefish Asteroid.

In regional news, we have three new connections in Ogof Agen Allwedd, a report on the iron mines of Anjou, an extension to Big Sink Cave in the Forest of Dean, a new dig in Yorkshire's Marble Steps Pot, student parties, an obituary for Tony Boycott, a tight find in the Peak District and a discovery in County Kerry with extensive formations.

Thanks for your kindly words...sadly, SWCC are a long way from me, about 2 hours, I do not drive myself, and I do not want to ask my poor non caving hubby to drive miles every weekend! Our emergency bag is called Colin after the dog in Spaced. Also, it makes the children laugh when we introduce him.

Like ships, I generally refer to my kit in the female gender, or maybe neuter, but I like the notion of having a bag with a name, perhaps we should have a debate on the best alternative names for bits of gear?

Besides your mined cave, are there many other mines or caves in your local area to tempt a club to come to you - a promising dig and a good pub may help as well!

From what a remember of Llanymynch, apart from the access off the middle of the golf club, was an extremely cold, water filled adit passage. As for local clubs (Caving Fox is a wee bit out!), if you fancied joining one, I would imagine the Shropshire Mining and Caving Club or Dudley Caving Club to be your two nearest. Anyway, welcome to the forum  :beer2: and good luck with the caving

Thankyou Zomjon, I will get on to that over the weekend. There is indeed a waterfilled section, but what with the almost constant rain of the summer (Llanymynch means "always ****ing raining" in Welsh), its now full up to a very unpleasent degree. I wonder if any of you guys know how big the whole cave is? So much is filled with miners rubble.

Does the survey include all the blocked of passages?

Yes, and all the unexplored ones.

Can I have next weeks lottery numbers please - they are in the unexplored section, noted on the survey.
Thanks
:beer2:

Is this some new caving game? Rip the piss out of the newbie? Shame on you if it is. I have read the survey, I just wondered if any of you, with all your experience, knew anything about all the blocked off stuff. Sheesh. :wall:

PS....get back under your bridge! The billy goats gruff are coming!

Apologies for any collateral fallout - there are many longstanding jokes about surveying of unexplored passage etc and the impossibility of such a thing...
My humour has been described as odd at the best of times, but when rhychydwr1 baited his hook I just had to bite! :-[
It would seem from the lack of sensible response to your legitimate and civil question is no, nobody here seems to know anything of the blocked off bits.
However, the mine exploration guys to be found at Aditnow http://www.aditnow.co.uk/default.aspx and Mine-explorer http://www.mine-explorer.co.uk/default.asp may know something of more use than idle chit chat and poor jokes. Please, come on in and join the party...

Incidentally, the picture is of a wee devil from Lubeck, not a troll or any other little beastie, so as for the gruff goats, bring em on - I'm sure with the right sauce they will be quite edible? ;D

Thankyou Ron and Ditzy xx Mr Brains, thankyou! I was not in fact having a pop at your beastie, I was trying to be clever with some trolling references. As usual, when I try to be clever, it backfired and covered me in sarcasm. How would you like your goats?

I do believe curried would be best, but any other suggestions are welcome  ;D
Not too sure of the geography, but there are loads of old mines in N Wales you can play in, and I am sure there are plenty elsewhere, nearer to you as well. If you can get Blaenau Ffestering there are the slate caverns, and plenty of people nearby to help show you around... the Cwmorthin complex has miles of passage, many of which can be explored without the need of ropes etc.
We could maybe meet you there if you wanted a trip...

Iron maiden and Spaced - nice one.

welcome to the forum!

you will note the regulars who are at times forthright, all friendly banter (well almost all).  ;)

Cirried goat Brains...good choice! As I am absolutely petrified of heights (I do them occasionally but it makes me vry), I would prefer a no rope situation. Cwmorthin sounds fun! j4nny, thankyou!

Cwm' is about 2-30 from where I live, so we would have to plan a meeting time and place accordingly.
Do you know anything of the "Freestone mines" near Bath / Corsham in Wilts - this area MAY be easier for you to get to? These are actually underground quarries, and the largest now accessible is at Box Hill, with perhaps 100km of passage to explore. These are about 2hr from me, but again there are many locals with specialist knowledge. All very "miney" but of course as has already been mentioned for caves there is S Wales, Mendips, some N Wales (but more mines) and of course Derbyshire and the Yorkshire Dales...
The world is your oyster...

Curried goats brains and oysters sounds like a tudor feast, whats for pudding? Apples stuffed with fruit flavoured dormice? I have been caving in North Wales, and South Wales. I like the sound of the quarry thing. I live 2 hours from everywhere....well, not Alice Springs or anywhere like that, but 2 hours from Brum, Liverpool, Manchester, Cardiff etc. Tell me more of Freestone Mines Brains....
