I've heard the Five Mines trip is not possible due to collapses - is that still the case? I have also heard about the Nenthead Great Traverse - which mines does this go through ? Thanks

The 5 mines trip and the Nenthead Great Traverse are essentially the same thing. The mines they traverse are Caplecleugh, Longcleugh, Smallcleugh, Rampgill, Scaleburn, Brownley Hill and Nentsberry Hagg's. Yes I know that is more than 5 mines, but I didn't name it.
Due to ongoing shale collapses in the lower reaches of Capelcleugh, there is less headroom in places. Some of these areas sump in wet weather.

The trip starts in Caplecleugh but around 1/2-mile inbye the level sumps in all but the driest weather owing to continuing collapse of the shale roof beam in the black crosscut above the Incline (just beyond the wet arch). Work continues sporadically to try to remedy this but with limited success. Leif or Heb would probably better know the current situation, although I may go have a look-see myself if my group fancies a cold wet bath! cheers MARK

There are very wet places as well as there, the collapse from no 13 rise and the final stretch before double rise up into Smallcleaugh has a very deep bit, about 8 inches of airspace, just after you climb over some boulders. Its the fun of the trip, my "FishTrip" as I always call it.

ebgb and I did the Brownley to Haggs section a couple of months ago. Haggs was brutal. Neck-deep in places, thigh deep where not. Lots of falls to clamber over, and repeat, for about a mile. Not much left in the tank for the walk back to the car! M
