    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

or you could try the Peak District cave registry. It does exist but its just not electronic and online.
or you could try the UKCaving wiki - its already started the process of having an online list of Peak caves. sadly while it was new and exciting it got lots of work. now not so much.

Graham: I say at my leisure as I know Just how much time a database / website takes to complete (one that works and looks good) as i've failed to hit self set deadlines in the past and been flamed for it !!

So, I'll get something of a plan down on paper and see what's what from there.

Cave_Troll: Where can I obtain a copy of the "PDCR" ? I wasn't aware of such a thing, what with being new to all this.

Cheers

Rich

Funny handshake and a rolled up trouser leg will gain you access.
I've been to Rennes le Chateau, does that help?

(Bonus points for anyone who gets the reference.)

(Sigh) . . .

Finding information about Peak District caves is easy; you just need to ask the right person. If you don't know who the right person is then just ask around and you'll quickly find out. I'm not going to suggest names here because it might lead to a deluge of requests which would distract certain people from certain more important work! But if you really want to find out, you will do so easily using a bit of gumption.

Most of the experienced cavers who have the information are only too happy to help. In this internet focussed age, where people expect everything at the click of a button, are we forgetting other alternatives?

Not at all Pitlamp, I've asked others for info, but as you say they may well have more important tasks to perform.
On those grounds it would be nice to have a centralised online registry.
In all honesty though, you can't beat conversing with other cavers that may or may not know the cave one is refering to, it may uncover other caves in the area that are not know to some.

I guess most of us who have the old caves of Derbyshire or COPD forget that some people may have never seen either, of them, I have an old Caves of Derbyshire you can have if you are in Eyam anytime, if that would help?

Jam - I'm sending you a PM in a few minutes to try to explain further why I was slightly coy in my response above. I think you'll understand.

I think it's the other way round... aren't those same experienced cavers who have the information just not realising the potential benefit of putting it online for all to see?

I don't think so bubba. The decision as to what's communicated to the whole world and what's quietly passed on privately is something which is often considered and agonised over at length. In my case I have always worked hard to get information out accurately and on time - I made the effort to write some sections for Shaun's Peak District Caving website guides for example. My conscience is clear.

Sometimes there are legitimate reasons for keeping something quiet other than within a small circle of people who need to know. We're exploring a new cave right now which took a year of negociation with the farmer to allow initial access; he specifically asked up to keep quiet about it. He has been really decent with us and so we don't want to let him down. When the time is right we'll make every effort to make the information available in whatever format our fellow cavers find most useful.

On a totally different subject, I was saddened to learn that you're wanting to step down from running this site and I'd really like to thank you for everything you've done over the years on our behalf.
