Omni Triact

I’m looking to move away from a central maillon as I’ve had that on my club SRT and I’m now building my own and want to try a omni triact. Was wondering if anyone is selling one or recommendations on where to get one cheap thanks .
:)

You really shouldn't be buying that stuff secondhand - that's the most critical piece of your setup. So my only advice is to buy a new one, with the warranty, but nobody will sell you a new one cheap as they're expensive. Or stick to the steel maillon if you can't afford a Triact Omni.

I use the Cordes courant Moka which is a Triact, I can't say it's better or worse than an Omni, but I bought it in an effort to make it more likely I'll take my srt kit off when negotiating tight bits. As it turns out I don't take on tight bits anymore.

The Moka is also a good krab, and reliable. The pointy ends also make it slightly less likely to rotate in the harness loops. I use one upside down to fasten my Garma chest harness, which also makes a great clipping point for a drill when bolting.;)

 UK prices, they're barely anymore expensive than a Stainless D-Mallion...

Tony sells one for £9 so a maillon can be the third of the price or am I confused ??

I found the opposite! I suspected it was the width of it, and maybe the slight point at the apex, whatever it was I found any leaning sideways in my harness to reach / look at stuff had me having a right old panic as the thing flipped rather rapidly through 90 degrees 😂
I sold it and carried on using my Omni

I've also not got on too well with my Moka, I don't like that attached items will snap to one of three points, even though on paper it sounded like a useful feature. Particularly if the chest ascender becomes balanced at the midpoint of one of the diagonal 'arms' under load and then snaps quickly back to the central point.

But being tight, I'll use it until its retirement before switching back to an Omni Triact.

It gets really tiresome reading this nonsense trotted out time and time again.
Every SRT caver uses second hand gear, all the time.

Club SRT kit..........second hand by multiple ' hands', used by trashy beginners (as we all were once).
Club rope.... Wow! How second hand is that? I mean, really. You have no idea how much use it has had or who used it last.
Pre rigged Gaping Gill ropes anybody??
Rigging krabs? Club slings? In situ tat and deviations? (Failure of an essential dev. could easily be life threatening)

And.. The OP has been caving on a multiple second hand Triact since day one.....

Nowt wrong with second hand kit. Assess it like you do all the other second hand kit you use every week.

Exasperated rant over ;)

And joy to all the GG cavers...... You'll have a good time whizzing down and up all the second hand crucial kit!

I’ve only used a central maillon with club kit but my own kit is made almost completely of second hand apart from the safety cord and cowstails rope and a simple bc no one sells them second hand 😂😂

That's because it's galvanised steel. Stainless steel versions are, as expected, about three times the price of that, so you were bang on ;)

I can see no point in paying extra for the stainless steel version, when the various krab like Omni and Moka ones are a similar price. If I was going to pay that amount, I'd go for an Omni triact for the ease of use advantages. I've had no more than minimal surface rust on the many mild steel D maillons I've worn out over the years. I generally replace them when the threads get a bit loose in feel when doing/undoing the sleeve. Never had a problem with them distorting and being difficult to do/undo, but I'm careful not to load them when kitting up before the sleeve is done up, so have always been able to use fingers and not needed a spanner. Cold weather can make that harder at times, but I've never not been able to get out of my SRT harness.
Did have an aluminium version years ago that was a significant weight saver, but I'm guessing that no one has been able to, or got round to certifying it as PPE, as they aren't for sale for that use.

Inglesport sells them...?

The blurb says they are OK if closed with a wrench.
I used one from the late 80s until some time in the early 2000s when it opened without asking me and left me hanging by one leg loop.
But I only ever tightened it by hand. And it had a lot of use in that time.
After I replaced it I noticed that occasionally it was possible to slide the barrel a little way so the hidden threads obviously are badly worn.
It shows some wear due to various harnesses having steel loops.
It'5 50g versus 150g for the steel version.

A similar experience back in the previous century. A lot of wear around the threads. They went off the market for a long time from the usual suspect caving suppliers. Looks like Petzl have gone to the trouble of certifying it. An inbetween price point between the steel D and the stainless D and Omni etc. I'm happy to stick with the steel ones.
