Started off with a 4D maglight back in the days when i just wore old clothes and waterproofs.
Then had a series of cheapo and or crap headtorches, then a couple of zooms. finally upgraded to a 5led duo which now has 1w led one side and 12 leds the other. yes i always look for something brighter. so i've got another duo which is currently being modded with two 3w cree leds, one with spot optics and one with flood optics.
Photos will be posted when it all comes together.
The zoom has also been modded with a 3w led.

?225 for a petzl!!!
Is it just me or does i seem strange that Petzl gear is pretty much standard for so much in caving...yet their lights (since the days of carbide) have always been shocking ?!?

To be fair, I don't think the Ultra is intended as a caving light - more for night orienteering, etc where a lot of light for a short time is what people seem to want.

Larry, how long does that ebay light run for on the full power setting?

3xAAA,220lumens would suggest ~90 minutes on good NiMH, and much less on alkalines, unless (highly likely) it drops off from an initial 220lm rather sharply, making the figure of debatable value.

I'm also intrigued as to why they single out Italy as the one place where they can't deliver.

Here's another one for the "so-bright it hurts"-bridgade:
http://www.serv-light.com/index.html

no indication of price that I can see.

I actually e-mailed them the other day to find out about prices; this is what they said (in GBP)

Thanks for visiting the site!

At this moment we can only offer "the lamp only" configuration. This means
that you get a lamp with a cable at your desireable lenght, for helmet
mounting +/-35cm

included)
The lamp comes together with a solid bracket (not adjustable) and an
adjustable bracket. This bracket can be tilted (pivoted) at the desireable
angle.

Prices:(Euro)
shipping: 22 GBP
Two SSC P4 leds+one CreeP4 (standard C01 website):  153.84 GBP VAT incl.
One SSC P4, one P7+one CreeP4:  185.03 GBP VAT incl.
Two SSC P7 + one CreeP4: 216.83 GBP VAT incl.

Answer to question 1, went down Giants last week for three hours with it on full and its still going on the same batteries no drop off. It has got some sort of new CREE 5 bulb.  Maybe you know what that means.
Batteries are 3 x AAA 700mha.

Answer to question 2, I don't know but I'm sure we can think of plenty of anti Italian reasons.

thanks for the pointers on the serv-light. I agree with the chap who made the comment about having it waterproof to -40m.

Many eBay stores refuse to send to Italy because the Italian post is extremely slow.

Lasted about 24Hrs on full brightness, and was still going well after 30hrs.

Says its water resistant, it is certainly mud resistant.

Petzl ultra.... I know of one person who's said his switch is a bit dicky already (maybe one or two months use).

::)

I think that kind of  money is better spent on a more suitable light.

Use caving or use above ground?

But how long was it actually running at full brightness, not just giving some light after having been set off running on the highest brightness setting, even if theat output was still usable for something?

It can be hard to tell exactly, but if you had some other light that was a similar brightness to compare it with, which you only turned on to make comparisons (meaning the reference light should have the same brightness at each test), that might give some insights.

An easy way to test would be to take a picture of the beam with the same aperture, shutter speed and ISO settings.

caving

Actually - just remembered - this is a genuine quote from another ultra user in the same conversation which left me pissing in my pants..

nah yer, they're water proof, no, they are.. I've pressure washed mine, no, yer, no, it is.... there's sometimes some condensation on the inside of the glass, but nah yer, they're definitely water proof
