Proposed changes to North Yorkshire's Fire cover - Please read!

Firstly I should say quite openly that I have a proffesional interest in this but I also think it's important that it's brought to the attention of cavers who cave in the dales as it will seriously impact the ability of the fire service to attend incidents such as flooding and diving incidents.

Although fire service involvement with cave rescue is not particularly frequent it is by no means unusual and from a personal perspective I think that FRS and rescue team joint working is better now than ever.

Fire calls have dropped in the past 30 years and NYFRS are now reviewing how they provide fire cover across the county.

The preferred options are that wholetime fire appliances crewed by 4/5 firefighters will be replaced by a van with a crew of 2.

These vans will carry a limited selection of kit but will be unable to safely carry out rescues from fires, do anything other than very limited actions at a RTC and will not carry pumps capable of moving flood water, emptying flooded passage.

The stations where this is proposed are Harrogate, Ripon, Malton, Scarborough, Tadcaster and Northallerton.

The first 4 of those stations could be considered to be in caving areas and have attended cave rescue incidents in the past.

I would plead that anyone who caves in the dales, lives in the dales, has a club hut in the dales or travels by car to the dales takes a moment to look at the website below and comment on the plans.

Consider what difference that extra 10 mins waiting for a proper fire engine could mean to you in a car crashed on the A59 or in a burning club hut....

If anyone would like extra information I am happy to discuss via PM. For the record, no I don't play snooker, yes we have beds but I assure you they are not comfortable and yes I have rescued 2 cats from trees and many many seagulls.
