Rockfall in Goyden Pot Beware

Dramatic Rockfall after Flooding [NOTE WARNING BELOW]

There had been reports coming to the Black Sheep Diggers of a rockfall in Goyden pot down by the cascades. For a few years now blocks have fallen from the roof in the main chamber after each flood. But a rockfall further into the system is something new.

When the BSD team arrived at How Stean last Saturday morning they were greeted by Dan who showed them photos of foam from the floods and evidence of the rockfall. A whole slice of roof from Third Window across to the Bridge has peeled away, see photo with grey scar on the roof. It has left a lot of debris on the ledge above the main stream passage below and a huge block lying in the stream passage, see photo.

WARNING: Although the roof left by the peeled away section looks solid there may well be still something to come down. Also the debris on the ledge of the Third Window and Bridge could be knocked and fall into the main stream passage below. There still remains the repeated block falls in the main chamber with clear evidence of more to follow. Lastly the rockfall may have damaged the ‘Step in the Clouds’ rope traverse linking Third Window and the Bridge so may be unsafe.

The repeated flooding of Goyden places pressure on the roof and then the release of this pressure as it recedes is enough to loosen blocks. Interesting that after the recent flooding there is way more foam than usual, see photo.

There has also been a major influx of timber. Timber Passage is only just accessible, and we had dig out the entrance to Cap Left Crawl. We also had to declog the low bedding section in Carbide Tin Passage, near Five Ways Chamber.

The reason for our visit was to improve the Goyden Grovels route. From New Stream Passage, it now returns to Five Ways Chamber, instead of Labyrinth Passage, to make it even more fun.

I will try and get back in with my chainsaw and cut it up some time soon.

Cap Left gets blocked after any substantial flood. If planning on exiting via Cap Left it's worth checking if clear first. Only a couple of minutes from the entrance and a hell of a lot easier clearing from that side.
