Smoking underground

Agree with finster its tricky one . I think I would try and appeal to the sense of decency of the smoker pointing out that most cave air is sweet and delicate and should be left uncontaminated by smoke. And if that failed I would kick their head in. ( if they were small and had the power of an asmatic ant with a load of heavy shopping)

Fair enough - not saying I would (I'm usually too out of breath  - I am trying to quit, but I broke a tooth on the nicotine gum yesterday  so the money I save on fags is going to pay for the dentist!)

I smoke(roll ups, not american cigarettes which are rancid)......it's a terrible habit and bad for the health but so's the caving trips i do.......and so's lotsa other shit out there in the world that a majority of folk choose to ignore.......i smoke underground generally when i get to the bottom, you know a sentimental moment like standing atop a mountain a post sexual moment it's this reason i've not given up and have just cut down instead. Anyway to the point 'the day that a majority of you guys come and join me on the trips i do then you can complain all you like.......but i doubt that's gonna happen so continue punching the air with your little debate. If anything needs banning underground it's carbide due to the damage it does, soot marks and the waste etc....etc. I can understand where you guys are coming from, i've met very few non smokers who agree with smoking period! in any given situation......but just remember at the end of the day it's just tobacco that's all it is, humans have been smoking the shit for thousands of years, it grows naturally for f*** sake.

Hey Graham!
Shot aye!
That's a pretty heavy thing to say, i ain't made any plans for this w/e yet, but when i do i'll email you the location and you can come and remove me and my friends from the cave, i'll even provide you with a shotgun if you like!.

I'm a reasonable guy and the day my non smoking partners had any reservations against me smoking underground i would cease to smoke instantly. Caving's my drug my addiction i don't have to smoke underground it just reinvigorates i guess.

It's not just natural though is it?  They put loads of chemicals in the stuff as well.  maybe they should put labels on fag packets listing the ingredients.

Not natural? And riding a bike or driving a car is?  ;)

Thats why I smoke roll-ups - far less chemicals added. Much better for you.  ::)

Folk talk about the damage done to the eco-system of any given cave system through smoking and i agree, but to put everything into perspective are we as human beings not damaging to the eco-system i.e hair loss, skin we shed(dust) the carbon dioxide we exhale etc... it's hardly like these features in the earth were carved from rock by water primarily for humans to explore in the first place. Look what we've done to our poor planet for christ sakes! you guys need to start looking at the bigger picture.

Good point.  From now on I'm going to walk to work.  Hang on!  Working isn't natural either.  Ok from now on I'm going to lig around the house.  Whoa!  Living in a house isn't natural either - if you see a naked bloke wandering around the moors you'll know who it is.

Don't smoke myself but don't have a problem with those that do. It's damn usefull for chasing elusive draughts.
Might have to start taking a packet with me just to assert the freedom to smoke though!
Reading some of these messages the "ban it" brigade have even reached here.
What will they try to ban next? Seriously peer pressure should be enough to dissuade most folk, if others on the trip object strongly.
To any one else who happens to be down there, tough.

I've personally got no objections against folk digging choked passages and blasting or forging routes through boulder chokes but i do object to natural cave passage been enlarged to allow larger folk or people in general to pass by.......isn't that damaging the eco system why isn't that an issue. I was involved in a project at the beginning of the year, i'm not mentioning who/what/where and i only visited on one occasion(to ascertain whether the cave could be furthered, few people had ventured to the end due to it's nasty nature) but from the looks of things the amount of actually enlarged passage was considerable and i was in some ways appalled. Don't get me wrong i've nothing against attacking boulder chokes or choked passage but enlarging actual natural passage is in my eyes unethical, it's like chipping holds on a rock face to bring the grade down to one's own level of abilities, i'm sure their are folk who disagree with me just like they disagree with me smoking......the door swings both ways.

I think the point is theres a time and place... I enjoy a toke on the pipe in the pub or at the hut, but just not in a cave.  Your right though if we're not careful some do gooder will try and ban caving!!!

This is a sensitive subject. Those who take extreme stances are probably only prolonging the issue.

Smoking was once accepted without question. So was spitting and having a piss in the street.

Maybe smoking will one day be just another filthy habit that people do out of sight and away from others.

Personally I would like that day to come sooner rather than later. But I am not going to lecture people about it - just let 'nature' take its course.

According to a survey 95% of smokers would give upi if it was easy or they had the will power.
Personally I dont give a shit if they give themselves cancer or fill the chancellors pockets with cash.
As long as they do not inflict there smelly fucking habbit on others.
live and let live,so carry on smoking if you want just don't do it in places where there are none smokers ie anywhere but your own or another smokers property. You have the choice to smoke. By doing it in public (including in caves ) you take away my choice not too so just stop it

Grab your fag and put it out or punch you in the gob. Or both. Or neither. Depending on how big you are.

At the risk of being off topic, for many years I tried to give up, and found the biggest aid was... Change of Lifestyle.
Drink bitter not lager, or vice versa, use the lounge not the snug. eat sarnies not pot noodle, etc.
Smoking will then only be 1 factor among many, and more easily dealt with.
I was in Germany on business for 6 months, and despite it being the last bastion of the unrepentant smoker, I was done after a few weeks.
Oh, and BTW, dont tell yourself you are giving up, that is a psycho-hurdle, you are only stopping for a while.... just make it an extra day every 24 hrs. You can smoke whenever you want, but you choose not to
Backsliding? not the end of the world - try again, and dont wait to finish the pack - bin them now, or if that is too painful give them to someone else. GFI
