Oh dear oh dear, looks like the armchair cavers and weekend warriors have found something to spout off about!

I love the attempt to subtly say that only smokers are real cavers.  :tease:

Graham: Have you never noticed how some who carry guilt or shame about their behaviour are often all the more vigourous at defending themselves? You see it in children frequently.

Using childish language to browbeat others who have different attitudes either way, is just as anti-social as imposing the effects of an unpleasant habit on other people.

Guilt? whats that then?
May I point out that it was an anti smoker who first suggested on this thread that he would consider verbally and physically abusing anybody he found smoking underground.

I chose my words carefully. Note the word SOME, and EITHER WAY.

Hand-bagging each other is pointless. I suspect that everyone who smokes knows that there are non-smokers who don't like it, and everyone who doesn't smoke knows there are smokers who don't give a damn. Nothing written here is going to change that. So what was the point of raising the subject in the first place?

The wanna be hard man's throwing his weight around again, physical and verbal abuse i'd love to see him try, we'd leave him where we found him.
Graham 'beer drinking junkie'.......SAFE BEHIND A BEER aye, let me guess you do your caving in the pub. Why didn't you answer my reply on pg2 yesterday.

If someone is in contact with Bubba maybe it's time this thread should be holted or something before things turn nasty.

Mr bristol university 987 posts aye.......sounds like you spend half your life here. only real cavers smoke, i'm been presumptuous here but willing to take a chance i've smoked for 10 years and i bet i could out cave you on your best day, again i'm been presumptuous again but i doubt you know what a real hard cave trip is, again if this is not the case then defend yourself, it's more interesting than arguing about smoking, time to shut up about it everyone, this is going nowhere!.

Simon, it is generally agreed these days that smoking is a pretty nasty activity that damages you and damages those around you. Cigarettes are the only products on general sale that carry such prominent health warnings. Why do you get so aggressive in your tone when defending it?

Lads, time to pick your toys up and put them away. You little darlings have worn yourselves out and you're all grumpy now!

:sneaky:

Time to count to ten.

You can't fight in here.... it's the war room!!

I mentioned earlier why i smoke, i like smoking and do not intend on giving up, if you had my ambitions believe me you'd understand.

Not sure that I do; as someone who spent some years working in hospitals, I can only guess that your ambition is either to die early and painfully from cancer or to spend your declining years strapped to an oxygen bottle with emphysema. Neither is to be recommended, take my advice.

Obviously you don't understand.
I've already said it once, Non smokers die of cancer and lots of other nasty stuff everyday. Here in the dales i know of more healthy folk who've mysteriously died of cancer than i do folk who were asking for it.

Grab your fag and put it out or punch you in the gob. Or both. Or neither. Depending on how big you are.

The tyranny of the majority appears to be alive and well in the caving world

I don't wish to be rude but it is you who don't understand. You don't need to tell me that non-smokers die of cancer, I spent a long time this summer sitting with a dying friend. She had never smoked, but then the cancer wasn't in her lungs or her throat.

However, there is absolutely no doubt that smoking kills smokers, more smokers suffer and die from the effects of the weed than from any other cause. If you don't die in a road acident or under a collapsing boulder choke then smoking will, with something like a 95% probability, contribute to your early and painful death.

However, that is not the basis of this thread. If you wish to kill yourself that is your perogative, just don't do it in a way that affects the rest of us and everybody will be happy.

That's very interesting, Simon. I never knew that. I'll pop out and get a packet of Rothmans immediately. I always wondered what I was missing. I can't believe I've been misled about the dangers of smoking for so many years. Do I need to move to the Dales to take advantage of this secret of longevity?

Sorry, couldn't resist it, but ... well.... honestly!
