Statutory Licensing of Welsh Club Huts

There are a handful of bothies in Wales officially maintained by the MBA and on their website, but this is done on behalf of their respective landowners. The MBA doesn't own any of these buildings. As it happens, the largest (perhaps) Welsh bothy landowner is the Welsh Government/Ministers via NRW which "manages" government forests. The next largest landowner of bothies is probably Welsh Water.

Take a bothy like Nant Rhys. It doesn't have gas or electric or running water, and there is a composting loo. That's fairly typical. Ditto Penrhos Isaf. Both of these are owned by Ministers. Let's hope the Welsh Government is in a position to obey its own new laws or spend a load of money to bring their bothies up to hotel standards.

MBA is run on a volunteer basis and worthy of support. I helped build the metal roof that is on Penrhos now. The many Scottish bothies provide great bases for classic hill walking, and the best of them (personal opinion and I've used a lot of them) is...

What is there not to like? Why not leave it alone?

Don't forget that you can already be hauled over the coals and made to comply over fire safety issues; although the "standards" applied by different fire service areas don't actually appear to be "standard" when you look at what has been considered acceptable in different club huts.

I think without an exemption the small club huts would go out of 'business' as it would be too onerous and expensive to comply wih the pages of proposed requirements . The purpose seems to be to create a 'Welsh wall' to keep the invaders out !

Beyond 2030 this issue could be irrelevant due to the lack of EV charging as it is being proposed to limit chargers to Welsh residents on the grounds that there isn't the grid capacity to handle visitors cars and that upgrading would cost billions (even if the copper was available -which it isn`t) ,so you will be able to get into Wales but not out - you will then need a license to spend the night stranded in a layby which you won`t be able to get as there won`t be a phone signal !
