"Tagging" someone

Is it possible to add a tagging feature, so you can tag a specific recipient in a response to a thread, perhaps to notify them to the thread.

Looks like there is at least one add-in for simple machines forums. Not sure of the ins and outs of implementing it though, or if there is significant demand.
