Whilst yet again suffering the ravages of man flu, I've been doing a count of the entrances into The Three Counties System, including those caves where the entrances may be currently blocked, and I make it 46. Have I missed any out?

There's an entrance near Peterson (north of I think) - mentioned in RRCPC 10, not sure if it has a name and haven't got it to hand to check.

Most of the original exploration in the Ease Gill system was of course undertaken through "Oxford Pot" (blocked for many years) which is very close to County Pot entrance.

Thanks - I had Oxford Pot on my paper list, but failed to transcribe it! So what's this missing one on Leck Fell?

Finally dragged my carcass upstairs and dug out said journal, the name is Smokeless Hole.

A lot of gates needed then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And there we have a fine reason not to gate anything then - the cost alone

I'm not a mathematician, but I would have thought that each entrance has 47 possible through trips, and there are 48 entrances, so that only gives 47 * 48 = 2256 through trips.

I'm not a mathematician, but I would have thought that each entrance has 47 possible through trips, and there are 48 entrances, so that only gives 47 * 48 = 2256 through trips.

Except of course some entrances are blocked - so we need to know how many entrances are "available" or open for through trips. A new list perhaps

Yes - it does. I did wonder whether to include the Dry Entrance, but there's probably as much passage involved as in Swindon Hole and Corner Sink, so I think you're right - it should be included.

Doesn't this formula calculate too many through trips as it includes trips between the same entrances but in the opposite direction. Or are they different trips if you reverse them?

They are indeed different trips if you reverse them.
If you had a coffee paste cake covered in chocolate paste, then you might eat the chocolate but stop at the first hint of coffee.
But, if you had a chocolate paste cake covered in coffee paste, then you wouldn?t touch it.

Dunno why people go on about the Dales, seems to me that there's only actually one or two caves up there.
