Thursday snow.

The roads in Clitheroe were barely passable today (at least until the afternoon) I did not even bother driving and walked the 2 and a bit miles to work today. So a minor road like the one to BPF and the steep inclines which a now doubt full of icy snow due to a short afternoon thaw to make some ice would make it impassable.

It's pretty entertaining here in Stainforth (3 miles from Settle on the Settle to Horton road). We had to leave our camper van in Settle on Thursday night as the roads hadn't been gritted at that stage and we couldn't get up the little rise after Watershed Mill. Having abandoned the van on Booths car park, we went off in the car to Center Parcs (where it snowed all weekend too). When we got back home tonight, the roads were fine as far as Stainforth itself - we turned into the village and slid sideways into a heap of snow. We left the car there and walked through the village, marvelling at the 4 foot high snow heaps by the side of the road. At our house, the garden was so full of snow that the 5 steps looked like a gentle slope and we had to wade through 18" of the stuff to get to the door! Think the camper might be staying at Booths for a while yet. Even more worryingly, the guinea pigs are stranded with a friend in Settle.

Does anyone know if the road to Bullpot Farm is passable at the moment?
I've dispatched the advance scout; hopefully we'll have some news back from him this afternoon  :D

Park in barbondale and walk from there. It isn't that far to carry stuff from there and that road may well be passable. I'm in lithuania now. -20 with compacted snow on roads and everyone drives like normal. Not so many hills tho :cautious:

The advance scout took an off-road motorbike and failed to pass the first steep bit having made two attempts.  He chatted with the farmer at the bottom of the lane who told him he couldn't get up to feed his sheep.

Sounds like great fun  :)  Unless you're a farmer  :(

Is this impassable enough?
Ian.

We have Lost Johns & Notts booked for 27th & 28th. Does the road onto the fell get cleared well enough for 2-wheel drives. Sorry if this seems for any reason to be a stupid question but I have no idea how bad things are up there.

Update - Christmas Eve morning; we had some more snow in the Ingleborough area overnight. Looks like yet more shovelling needed in front of the house (sigh). Just been upstairs (8 a.m.) to look out of the window; traffic on the A65 seems to be moving OK, though there's not that many vehicles on it.

Another 6 inches in Leeds. It's really beautiful here. Now it's not actually snowing I shall go out and play.

My next-door neighbour's little girl has been trying to build an igloo in front of her house this afternoon.  Not quite enough snow (south Bradford) for such an ambitious building project, though...  :(

We managed to get out of Stainforth without embarking on another major digging/pushing exercise this morning, only to find that Settle is a cross between a slush pool and a skating rink. The main roads are clear, but the ploughs have shoved all the snow off the road and onto the pavements, into 3ft high lumps, so the pedestrians are having no option but to walk in the road. Of course, the council haven't thought about gritting side roads or car parks. The guy who works in the gym was telling me that he lives in Langcliffe and has been walking to work as his car has been stuck for a week. We're still hoping to be able to collect our camper van after xmas - there's no chance of getting it onto the village car park until the foot of ice and snow clears.

Yesterday I went to Ingleton and turned into the main car park (up a gentle slope), made it half way and slid gracefully back down again! It was possible to drive round the one way system, but the slope down to the waterfalls walk, I wouldn't even think of attempting.

So to the person who was considering Leck, unless you have a tractor, I'd give it a miss this time. ;)

Rachel - please could you give us an update at the weekend - or shall I just cancel Monday now?

Boxing day, early morning; slight thaw happening in light drizzle (at the base of Ingleborough; probably still freezing higher up though). We've had 3 mm of actual rain overnight.
