:D CHANGE IS COMING TO THE FORUM :D

Q has been working busily away behind the scenes updating UKC - we're planning on launching the new, mobile friendly version on March 1st 2022!!  ;)

I'll let Q  :sneaky: explain the technical side of it as not exactly my strong point.

We wanted to let folks know well in advance so everyone can get used to the idea - and embrace the change  (y)

I'd like to add some more emojis as :dig: has been a great addition - we need a caver if anyone can find one!

Many thanks to Q for the hardwork already put into this project  (y)

Watch this space for further info as we have it.

Cheers, Pegasus and Badlad

If it's going to be cool and trendy in 2022 it better have

Quantum computing
Cyber security mesh
providing "thought leadership"
Multiexperence
AI based hyperautomation

Not really sure what these terms mean, but I know everyone must need them. This list won't take more than 5 minutes to do will it?

Will it work on my Nokia Razor? I didn't get the newest gadget just to then not be able to check up on the latest cave moan or further entrench my position as the access Stasi on this newfangled internet thing. (personally I don't think it'll catch on)

Thanks to for all the fantastic work that goes into ukcaving, it's much appreciated!

The forum is long overdue some changes. It has been more or less the same since it's creation many years ago and over that time clearly technology has moved on. The forum software has had many add-ons and tweaks over the years which has left it quite bogged down with redundant bits and pieces and now has various issues.

One particular issue is that the site is not mobile friendly - a standard that is now required by search engines. The majority of internet use is now on mobile devices so we need to keep up with that. Don't worry if you prefer a desktop/laptop though, you'll not be left behind, but how the forum is presented to you will be different.

I have spent some time researching options for different types of forums and they all have their flaws. I have no found a perfect solution elsewhere so have decided to stick with the current software by Simple Machines. The main reason is that it would be very time consuming and difficult to transfer the current forum history to a new platform.

So, what's going to change? Well, I have found a new 'theme' for the forum which is mobile friendly and I have been working on tweaking to make it more appropriate for UKC. The theme will make the forum look a bit different than what you're used to but most of the features and usage that you're all familiar with will still be there as the underlying software is the same.

The forum will also be moving to a new web host, partly to reduce running costs but also to allow a new 'clean' installation of Simple Machines to be installed then the current data restored.

There will be bugs! It's simply not possible to fully test every element of this kind of change in advance so once the change is made, there will inevitably be bugs that will need to be sorted out. I will do my best to get them sorted as soon as possible.

I would like to clarify that although I am doing this in my professional time (as I have no other time to do it), I want to keep the cost down as much as possible for Tim and Jane. The forum is not profit making (far from it) so we have to balance what we'd like it to be versus what's affordable and realistic.

I hope you will all accept that change has to happen and give yourself chance to get used to it.  :kiss2:

Will it have a "dark mode" like most other stuff nowadays? If anything ought to offer a "dark mode" then, really, UKC ought to be at the forefront methinks since everything we do is in the dark!  :ang:

Some years ago UK Caving was always very slow to start up and load on my desk top computer.

Then somebody did something (mentioned on the board) and since then it has been lightning fast to start up on Firefox, putting other sites to shame.

...I am often resistant to change, but eventually recognise it has to come.

I'd be happy to make a small donation (but more than ?1!) at some point to 'smooth the transition' if it helped, and was legal? I'm sure a few would :)

That's so kind, thank you - however we've got it covered.

The best way any caver can support the forum is by posting, liking, sharing and telling your caving mates about the forum in 2022  (y) (y)

Thanks everyone  :)
