US American Caver Living In Denmark Looking to Cave in UK and Beyond (?!)

Hey everyone,

I'm a friendly US caver residing in Roskilde, Denmark until this June or so! Then I have no plan but to romp around Europe until next Winter. I'm desperate to make some caving buddies and get underground. I'll be hopping from Edenborough to London to Wales in early June, but it's also not so hard for me get to the UK either. I'd love to join any trips in the UK or the continent , or help make trips happen! Reach me at 971 666 5771 any time.

I'm a member of the National Speleological Society and Grottos in NYC and LA. I've done some in-cave SRT, practiced a fair bit outside, certified Level one by the US National Cave Rescue Commission, been in some mines, and super enthusiastic to grow my skills so I can give back to the community. All that said, I'm still pretty green, I got into this during the pandemic and it's been tough to get underground, and rusty at that (see: I live in Denmark).

Best,
Forest Hunt

Hey thanks y'all! I'm impressed for such a quick response! I'd love to go to Cavefest in August and actually free all of that month, so now considering staying in the UK for some time before that and trying to do some caving if I can find the people and make the logistics work!

The International Congress of Speleology looks amazing, but also a little pricy.

I am based in the Yorkshire Dales, and would be happy to accompany you on a trip or two in this area, given a little notice.

How does the ICS work?  Is it similar to Eurospeleo, lots of rigged caves and you let the booking table know where you're going? Or are do they need guiding hence the fee for the trips?

Helloo !
So I'm a Welsh caver who lives in France - The Doubs department to be specific..! Happy to show the some of the the muddy delights of this part of world, other cool caving areas of France or even the UK if I'm around. PM me  :)

Re UIS Congress: yes similar job to eurospeleo. Not sure of exact details. The fee paying bits are for "excursions". That is things further away and camps in different regions of France before and after the congress.

Hey Forest

We hope you have a great time caving in the UK later this year. You?ve come to the right forum for lots of friendly advice and information.

If you find yourself caving in the north of England (e.g. the Yorkshire Dales) or Scotland then there are lots of resources on our website: www.cncc.org.uk

In particular:

Cave descriptions: https://cncc.org.uk/caving/descriptions/
Rigging topos: https://cncc.org.uk/caving/topos/
Cave map: https://cncc.org.uk/caving/caves/map.php

Also, if you are looking for cheap accommodation in our region where a beer with other cavers is guaranteed, several local clubs have bunkbarns and welcome visitors for ?10 or less per night. Several will no doubt be happy to welcome you on a weekend when members will be around ans trips are happening.

Club bunkbarns: https://cncc.org.uk/about/accommodation.php

Langcliffe (who has posted above) knows our caves better than most and taking up his kind offer would be an excellent choice. Likewise, the Gaping Gill winchmeet mentioned by Ian P is an excellent opportunity to visit the region and see some of our finest potholes while they are rigged.

For the other caving regions of the UK, our sibling organisations have similar resources, including:

Derbyshire Caving Association: https://thedca.org.uk/
Cambrian Caving Council (Wales): https://cambriancavingcouncil.org.uk/
Council of Southern Caving Clubs (Cheddar area): https://cscc.org.uk/wiki/
Devon and Cornwall Underground Council: https://dcuc.org.uk/

We also recommend the Cavefest event mentioned above, in Wales; this is an excellent opportunity to get some guided trips around some of the finest caves in the UK... even if they aren?t in Northern England!

Happy Caving

As you have probably discovered Denmark has no natural caves, but if you need an underground fix there are old limestone mines open to the public near Viborg - Google for M?nsted Kalkgruber and Daugbjerg Kalkgruber. M?nsted Kalkgruber is well worth a visit as it has 10 km of large tunnels which you are allowed to explore on a self-guided tour.
The nearest natural cave is a showcave in Bad Segeberg, near Kiel, Germany. There are also mines and caves in Sweden.

Yessss! Those tin mines have been on my agenda for a long time. I'm really hoping I can find a chance this Spring to get over to them. Thanks for the pointer!

Hey, thanks so much for this comprehensive reply! I'd really love to get up to Northern England! Although I have some inertia against it in that I now may not be available until after Cavefest in September and I don't have any vert gear. But in the coming weeks when I have time I will knock my head against this and see what I can make happen.

Y'all are fantastic, looking forward to meeting some of you and getting underground!
