A shock to hear about 'Wanted Inn' closing. Sad loss not just to cavers, but locals as well. :(
After my midweek evening cave/mine trips, I like to finish evening off with a drink at a local pub. Pubs, especially out in the countryside, need our support more than ever!
However, pubs in my town of Chesterfield are presently under threat from "Tesco", wanting to convert them into convenience stores! One pub has already been converted and another two(Both going concerns) are possibly next. Protest action groups have been formed at both pubs, to try to save them. Let's not forget that a pub can be turned into a store, without planning consent, that is the law at present.
Unlikely, that would happen at 'Wanted Inn', but in a larger village location, possibly.

Tesco in my opinion just bulldoze there way through everything, nothing surprises me where they are concerned, am sure some backhanders must go out to obtain planning permission, they got planning permission for a new store in Greenfield against all local opinion

Unfortunately with the way the licensing system and planning systems work, Tesco and the likes have very little to do to convert a pub into a convenience store.

Pubs usually have drinks and food licences and they get transferred with the property, all Tesco have to do is apply to open early/close late and that's usually just a formality because the pub probably did that anyway!

Spires is right, Chesterfield is turning into 'Chestescofield', they must see the area as an easy touch! I live just to the south of 'Chezzers' and there has been vociferous opposition to Tesco. We currently use one of the aforementioned pubs gardens and trees as a SRT training location!

Maybe a Tesco would be good at the Wanted location  :-\.
If I was caving in the Castleton area and found my batteries needed replacing it would come in very handy  (y).
I could also get something to eat and a few cheap beers   (y). It's just a pity there's no room for a petrol station because I could re-fuel my car ready for the journey home also   ;) ;) ;)

By the sound of things people on cave trips are finding it hard to get a pint in the area after late trips

Anyone know any cave friendly pubs down that way

Not so close but Litton has a red lion for those heading south eh? Bograt. (y)
You do have to ask them to take the sparkler off for a proper pint tho'.

Yeah...missing The Wanted Inn already...
Went down to East Canal Thursday night...was in Castleton just after 11...
All the pubs were open but stopped serving (I guess about 11:10) went in
The Bull, The Castle, The Peak Hotel & The Cheddar Cheese...none would serve us!
Whats the score for folk that want a late post caving beer in that part of the world...
Do the TSG'ers have a caver friendly pub we can adopt?

The Wanted Inn went to auction yesterday. I don't yet know who bought it but I heard a rumour that two consortia were interested, one from Sparrowpit, the other from Peak Forest.
It's fairly unlikely to get a change of use so hopefully it's just a matter of time before it reopens. Whether it will stay the same is another matter.

As far as I remember, last orders in pubs in the UK is 22.55. So 23.10 is too late for last orders. The TSG doesn't have any more priveleges (probably less) than anyone else in the village, and I can't think of any pubs in Castleton that would willingly serve after-hours booze specifically to cavers, especially on a main street with a regular police patrol (who also obviously know where the Chapel is). I recommend going an hour earlier, and then if they do decide to 'close the curtains', at least you earned your seat.

Generally around 22.50-23.00 (at least that seems to be the case with most pubs I visit for an after caving drink) unless a later licence was applied for and of course the local authority agreed to it.

Not these days PW, pubs can decide on their own opening hours except for Sunday. They do, however, have to notify the authorities of their intentions and most seem to opt for 23.00 on weekdays.

I believe a chap from Castleton bought it for 100k, not sure what the plan is though, but I don't think he is a builder
