Whillans Alpiniste rucsack free to a good home

Cavers of a certain age who have also climbed or done some mountaineering will no doubt be familiar with the Whillans Alpiniste rucsack. Designed by the great Don Whillans himself, it was was much sought after. But they haven't been made for decades. I have one surplus to requirements, in reasonably good condition. I would like it to go (free) to someone who would appreciate it. Please PM me if interested; collect from the Dales, or we can ask for help with caver post if necessary.

My best mate in our scout group many years ago had one of these and I was always envious.

I'd be snapping your hand off if I didn't have a UK made POD that will likely see me out.

I'm interested, but I'll also ask our outreach team at work who help lots of groups get out into the Dales that otherwise wouldn't have access to the outdoors, and if they think it would be useful I think they should have priority over me... could you clarify roughly how big it is / how many litres? Thanks

I'm not sure Whillans did litres - though I can personally confirm he was very good with pints (from personal experience when I was a teenager, hic!).

This isn't really a routine spare rucsack as such, it's a piece of mountaineering history that really needs to go to the right person. (Not that you're necessarily the "wrong" person THT; I hope you see where I'm coming from.)

Oh dear; this leaves me with a slight dilemma; THT responded first but didn't sound certain; Chris is keener but was slightly behind. Tell you what, as this particular rucsack was originally given to me long ago by an NPC member, I'll let Chris have it (to keep it in the family, so to speak). But I'm having a major sort out and it's likely others will emerge, in which case I'll let you know first THT; that OK?

Chris; I'll contact you off forum when I've stashed it for you in the obvious place!

Maybe someone else reading knows of another spare rucksack that THT could give as a donation, if so everyone would be happy...

I've got a Whillans Alpiniste that I would be happy to see go to a good home. (I've offered it on ukclimbing.com with some interest shown but nobody took it in the end.)
Hi Dave. Coincidentally I work at a residential outdoor Ed centre in the Peak District and our site technician is building some lovely shelving that we’re planning on using to display old bits of climbing/caving/hillwalking kit. I’d love to be able to display a whillans sack alongside a bit of info/hopefully a photo of Don. Any chance I could put in a bid for your rucksack? Thanks!

That's a nice idea, but I would prefer the rucksack went to someone who would use it and preferably someone who needs one but can't afford to spend money on a new one.

I know it sounds greedy but I'll claim any thing similar for my schools Forest School kit shed. Rule changes on how we can use Sports Premium money in school stop us buying material assets and we are trying to build up some kit or a decent quality. I scrounge anything going. Forest of Dean based.

Hi Matt
That's the sort of home I'd be happy to see it go to. So, it's yours for the cost of postage (or perhaps you can arrange caver post from north Wales to the Forest). DM me with your address.
Dave
