Why is Pippikin Pot rigged?

Does anyone know when it was first left rigged and why, and who replaces the ropes (if anyone)?

Just curious :)

I suspect the reason it's been left rigged is to support Ease Gill traverses without a pre-rig, as I'd imagine if it were for project work Mistral would be a more convenient entrance for most areas

Definately wasn't rigged when I did it in the early 80's.

My first trip down felt like a trip into a really special place. I was fired up by Sid Perou's recent brilliant TV programme and it was just before Link Pot was explored opening up an easier way in. The squeezy, thrutchy drops never desperate but enough to put a niggling doubt in the back of your mind - we're going to have to get back up and out through this lot ... The big stuff down below seemed like the most remote place I'd ever been to and it felt untrammeled and a privilege to be there. When Link was opened up, of course we used it and Mistral when that was enlarged but I always felt that something was lost.

I agree. For many years Pippikin was my favourite place. My first trip was in late 1983, delayed due to a rather silly accident involving 2 fractured vertebrae. Although there may have been good reasons widening up the Mistral, it is a shame. No ropes then BTW, all ladders.

Is it on the descent adopt a cave scheme?
Way back in prehistory (1980s) my old club, Lancs Caving & Climbing Club, adopted Pip. We even dragged a few bags of rubbish and spent carbide out. I'm sure we registered ourselves with Descent adopt-a-cave back in the day? The caving side of the club ebbed somewhat such that they even changed the club name by swapping the two activities round. There are still a few that cave but nothing like back then so I'm not sure they'd want to take Pip on again.

Incidentally, I've been down Pip today and the ropes from the 3rd (or perhaps 4th) pitch downwards all look to have been replaced quite recently. The first couple looked older but there were no signs of significant wear.

Apart from the fact that the one for the first pitch has completely changed colour in the sun? 😄

The surface rope does have direct light, and is definitely bleached.

But back to the topic. No-one knows who installed the ropes, or why, or when.

Not a surprise as I asked a very similar question earlier this year, with no responses.

I presume these ropes have been abandoned to their fate.

Regarding Ease Gill Traverses, I don't think the majority of cavers are doing this trip.
