Mendip Cave Quiz
« on: July 04, 2020, 08:49:26 pm »
Hi all,
My Dad loves to compile a quiz and has kindly compiled me a Mendip Cave quiz, I think I've managed to attach it to this post. I'll post the answers up next week :)

I'm normally completely rubbish at these things. Managed to get a few so far. Excellent quiz.

Managed 1 to 12, 17, (18 if it's a part of a cave), 20, 21, (possibly 22), 23, 25 & 27 so far. Helps if you know what a cleeve is. 13 is a bit obscure. (I hope Pete got 7!)

I think I have them all now! :bounce: (if 18 is a part of a cave, and I'm a bit dubious on my answers for 15 and 30...)

I can't get 2  and I think the clue for 6 is dodgy because occidental refers to West rather than East and there is no West twin swallet.
My answers..
1. Eastwater Cavern.
2. -
3. Flower Pot.
4. GB Cavern.
5. Pearl Mine.
6. East Twin Swallet. ?
7. Reservoir Hole.
8. Pierre's Pot.
9. Goatchurch Cavern.
10. St Cuthbert's Swallet
11. Lionels Hole.
12. Rickford Rising.
13. Whitsun Hole.
14. Ubley Hill Pot.
15. Rod's Pot.
16. Swildons Hole.
17. Fairy Cave.
18. Lobster Pot.
19. Rhino Rift.
20. Pinetree Pot.
21. Longwood August System. (or series).
22. Sidcot Swallet.
23. Drunkard's Hole.
24. Reads cavern.
25. Dolebury Levvy.
26. Shatter Cave.
27. Singing River Mine.
28. Great Maple Mine.
29. Stoke Lane Slocker.
30. Axbridge Ochre Cavern.

Well I've sweated all morning on these so had to get them out there!  :)

There aren't that many bird named holes to choose from!

Although I'm not sure 5 is correct.

there is no West twin swallet.

See https://bec-cave.org.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=889:belfry-bulletin-no-242-may-1968&catid=68&limitstart=1&Itemid=508&lang=en for example... Looks like an alternative name for Flange Swallet, which is now backfilled.

I also have a different answer for 5. 2 was the first one I got! Admittedly I had to double check about the basket, but it checks out.

Pink pearl is indeed, but it's not the most obvious choice...

Also West Twin Swallet is actually Yew Tree Swallet. Also formerly known as Kongs Hole.

I'll post the answers this week, just emailed my Dad to ask him to send them over :)

I'm sure he could prob be encouraged to do another, perhaps mines or South Wales based, or maybe a Mendip local area one...

Well it's the Mendip forum, so sticking to mendip questions would be great!  Up to your Dad but that was a bit of fun for me.  :)
