Walking out from Penwyllt one very misty day looking for Pant Mawr Pot. Norman Martell says after about an hour and a half "I think we have overshot. That is a coal seam in the stream bed".

One of the uni groups even managed to get lost in the eastwater field...

To be fair, re-reading the trip report, it sounds like most of the party were probably ill and hung over!

"It's a dry cave."
has got to be a classic. As far as I'm concerned, if you don't get your ears wet, it's a dry cave. Others on the trip may disagree and make their displeasure known.

"First you must conceive that the earth is everywhere full of windy caves, and bares in its bosom a multitude of fissures and gulfs and beedling, precipitous crags. You must also picture that under the earth's back, many buried rivers with torrential force roll their waters mingled with sunken rocks."

"You won't need knee pads"

I think there was a series of T-shirts produced in the US with a title like Great Caving Lies.
The one thing to remember about an adventure is that if it turns out the way you expect it to, it has not been an adventure at all.

I always remembered when on exped in Serbia one of the Serbs said

"The caves are not like rabbits, they won't run away"

Always stuck with me when I need to convince myself to go to Inglesport instead of caving

Indeed there was. 'Great Lies of Caving', by Jerry Wallace. 'You don't need kneepads' was no. 3. I have one somewhere.
Some others were No. 1, It’s right off the road; No. 2, We’ve got plenty of rope; No. 4, It’s not wet

After a stomp at Priddy village hall circa 1989 the following was slurred by a crumpled wreck propped up against a wall.
“That was f##king marvellous, it’s not so much a club, it’s more a way of life”
Tony “J Rat” Jarratt referring to the BEC.

“Caving is a fun and worthwhile pursuit…”
Always said in an “interesting” bit of cave, and repeated several times, as if to convince themselves it was true

I can't remember the exact wording, but somewhere I have a newspaper cutting of an article by JW Puttrell when the DPC explored the Lower Series of Bagshaw Cavern, around 1904, and he said he 'would have given good money for a stout pair of kneepads'. My first trip down there also convinced me to at least upgrade my current pair.

Yep, it was Jim Dale that said it!
The neck deep water was unfortunately in a crawl that I managed to exit about 5 minutes before it filled up.
