Halkyn deep level repair work ?
« on: November 18, 2021, 05:12:55 pm »
I noticed this probably 12 months ago, but never posted anything about it on AN as I wasn't certain. Then AN went dark, and I couldn't be bothered registering for on here for ages ..

Anyway, been for a mooch around today on the hillside area above the Halkyn Deep level entrance (the field right next to the A55). There's been a substantial amount of work going on, which has now all being largely landscaped over. Lining up the exit stream on mapping, the main area of work would appear to be pretty much over the line of the level (assuming it's straight for the first portion, which I seem to recall it is, from previous visit to the tunnel itself)

The area of work also appears to be about 800m from the entrance portal - and again, if I recall correctly, the collapse was about that far in (I think UCET did a trip right to the collapse, don't know if Ian or someone could confirm or had any idea as to how far in it was)

Anyway, ATB to you all

Rob

It may be a shave under 800m to the collapse - it certainly feels that long but I suspect it is probably more like 500m  :)

Just had a look on Google earth. There is an image from June 2020 as 'original'. Then in April 2021 you can see the massive amount of material that has been moved about, then another one from September showing the grass taking root.

From walking over the field today, there's certainly a considerable amount of brick material on there

Any idea of the nature of the work?

I remember when I went in as far as the collapse thinking that there must be a huge head of water behind the collapse as the water was moving under pressure behind the brick tunnel lining and squirting out most of the way across the tunnel through small holes in the mortar...

Today was just a surface bimble, wanted to look at a few things that I've just never been to, but have meant to for years !

I remember thinking the same thing myself - that it wouldn't be a fun place to be if that blockage blew, there had to be a fair buildup of water back there.

Might go have a look at the portal some time in the future, but the thought of slogging through all that thigh-deep crud to see if it's clear or not doesn't fill me with enthusiasm !

Far more tempting in that case.

Caroline says hi, BTW. Just so you know who this is. Haven't seen you in a few years

Access from one of the many shafts or other (larger, ahem) holes on Halkyn mountain ?

It's 7 years since I last visited the collapse in the tunnel. There was fair volume of water flowing out through the brick rubble, but it's a bit of dire place to mount a dig and the collapse was of unknown length  :(  I guess some more of the brickwork has collapsed and maybe this has showed on the surface and the powers that be had nasty visions of the hillside subsiding and flowing into the small village so decided to do a cut and cover repair. I do hope they have used reasonable size (say 600mm) sewage pipe to effect the repair and haven't included a grille or other tedious barriers. I guess a trip is in order to find out  :)

Sure it's the same collapse Mike? The end one must be backed up for a fair way judging by the water pressure.

When we walked in, the water was only welly deep. However it did have eels in there which was rather discomforting.

If you go down crockfords shaft which is in the halkyn castle grounds (200m)ish you will be the other side of the halkyn deep level which will eventually get you down to the Milwr Tunnel. Big day out

Thanks Mike, drove past that about 2 hours ago (while cursing the A55 closures) , was wondering about the area as I have taken an interest in discovering more about the geography of halkyn and loggerheads and surroundings as I'd like to walk around those kind of areas. Seems an interesting part of the world!

If you fancy a Milwr Tunnel trip or halkyn deep level trip give me a nudge

Sorry to piss on everyone's bonfire, but the work going on in the field is nothing to do with Halkyn Deep Level.  I pay far too many visits to the Halkyn BurgerKing (opposite) and can confirm the spoil that is being bulldozed around the field is arriving in lorries.  I guess farmers are making more money charging tipper truck people to dump spoil on their land than actual farming.  They have done the same at Junction 36 of the A55 (Broughton)
I do it because i can, I can because I want to, I want to because you said I couldn't.

Very disappointed, but many thanks for clearing up the mystery
