hi, i just joined here, and if anyones interested (because of the young caver's thing) i am 16 years old and have been caving since i was 10.
i live in reading, which is a stupid place to live if you have any intest in things rocky, but recently i heard a rumour that there are caves in caversham, hence the name---- cave-asham (geddit!!)
i find this pretty hard to believe but i was just wondering if anyone could spread some light on this, even to tell me that is ridiculous.
thanks. x

I did a quick root around the net and found this reference to them but no details: http://www.berkshirehistory.com/villages/caversham.html  and there is mention of several chalk pits/mines in the area too on www.subbrit.org.uk/sb-sites/QUARRY.doc. You can read about a recent trip to a chalk mine near Caversham & see the pictures here: http://www.c**tplaces.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5192

Hope this helps!

The chalk mines are at Emmer Green, I have been down them recently interesting but not the biggest of trips. There are two sites one controlled by Sub Brit and the other by the Local Scout Group. I went with Sub Brit and have been so far unsucessfully in trying to contact the person who controls access to the other mine controlled by the Scouts.  Of course theres always the 'caves' at West Wycombe.....
