Croesor & Rhosydd Slate Mines

Last weekend, a combined Gloucester SS/RFDCC group went through from Croesor to Rhosydd slate mines, and very exciting it was, too. But there is surely much more of these mines to be visited. Is there an online map, such as the one that exists for the Cwmorthin Slate Mine? So I can see what else there is under the mountain?

There used to be a survey online which stated it was 'reproduced from The Croesor File'. But the link is now dead.

However nothing on the internet is truly lost, and finding an old link to the site I was able to recover the text via the internet archive:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.anchor.co.uk/home/rob/GwyneddCavePot/Ogofa/Ogofa4/Croesor.htm

Unfortunately it appears the images including the survey plan have been stripped out  :(

Still, the page might give some clue as to who to chase about it?

I have an A3 print of the survey on the wall at work, but it is not particularly useful, most of the mine being flooded, and much of what appears on the survey apparently very different now due to collapse or being since mined away.

I've got a copy of that survey - but as footleg says - its useless - its very hard to understand whats going in with it. even when you have been in there.

Best thing to do with croesor etc is just go and wander, see what you find.

I have the said website somewhere on my machine, being the erstwhile rob concerned. I'll try and do a Flickr later tonight after my dinner. As Sam says though, where you can actually go bears no relation to the extent of the plan.

Some stuff I found - 3 sketches of a traverse by Peter Stockton which captures the essence..

Careful you don't venture onto the Friday Night Fondue Fest images if you know what's good for you.

And of course Croesor is only half of the mine..

"Rhosydd Slate Quarry" by MJT Lewis and JH Denton, ISBN 0 9522979 0 6 contains full surveys of Rhosydd. Although the 5/9 incline has collapsed since the book was published, making the trip from the West Twll to the 9 adit slightly more exciting.

Peter Stockton was on our trip - see recent video clip.

He disappeared from wales up to Barnard Castle (I think) shortly after our trip and I lost touch, Very nice man indeed.

If anyone has got contact details (or he lurks on this site) please get in touch via PM.

yes - the survey is the one I've got, and the one from "The croesor file" - not much cop, I coloured mine in to show the flooded bits - and it makes it a bit more readable.

The mine surveys are available on www.mine-explorer.co.uk for registered members.

You've seen most of the accessible bits of Croesor already :)

The lower levels, B, C & D down are flooded - these were the better, more stable parts of the mine and had been used for storage of explosives in the 1960s. They are, however, now very damp!

The upper levels, B, C & D up are basically inaccessible as the floors have been worked away and the cross-bridges collapsed. You can get across the two chambers on the right on floor A if you take a boat, but there's not much to see.

There may be an outside chance of there being *something* to see in the upper levels, but it seems highly unlikely that it's accessible, mostly on the basis that it would need a lot of climbing and all you would find would be a 30' tunnel that had a monstrous drop on both sides.

Rhosydd is another case altogether: it has a lot more accessible workings and can provide a bit more to play with. We're going to have a bit of a wider look a week on Saturday (May 17th) with the intention of finding a couple of new ways in/out which may make the through trip a bit more interesting.... have a look at http://www.aditnow.co.uk for information under "Events".

Incidentally, what condition is the sunken bridge in these days?

Has anyone got round to unbolting it from the far end and dragging it out yet?
