High CO2 is quite common in Tynings. Especially in the late summer (when everything is growing)...

East Twin - Collapse of boulders in roof of Spar Pot connection

During the heavy rain 2 weeks ago, mud/grave infil was washed out of the Spar Pot connection, followed a week later by a collapse of the boulders in the roof of the small chamber before you squeeze through into main rift in Spar. Hopefully the extent of collapse is small, but there is a large boulder choke just beyond.
There are also a couple of vicious looking flakes still wedged but only just, we will bring these down next week and assess what has moved, what hasn't.
For a few weeks at least, consider Spar Pot too dangerous.

Had a very tiring trip to the bottom of Tynings yesterday (05/05/13) with numerous stops on the way out to catch our breath.  I suspect the CO2 levels are quite high throughout the whole cave as we didn't notice any significant improvements until back at the entrance.  Unless we get a repeat of last summers weather things are only going to get worse down there over the next few months.

Very high levels of Co2 in Manor Farm today 15/12/2013, would advise people to avoid passing Alberts Eye - very large amount of Farm waste entering the cave at the aven near fleet street.

Drunkard's Hole. The girdered and cemented rock pile at the bottom of the tight chimney, before the pitch, appears to be suffering from some undermining due to the smaller debris falling away. Some of the downslope pile looked a bit precarious when we were there midweek, with several slippages occurring during the time it took to rig the pitch. This area would benefit from some consolidation with cement.

Noticeably poor air (probably around 2%) in PP. Mild exertion resulting in prolonged breathlessness.

Manor Farm:
High levels of CO2 noted. Very little (none) air movement and trip aborted at Alberts eye.
I have a tendency to be able to 'taste' (metallic) it and it was quite bad today  :cautious:

A report received that the air was bad in Manor Farm Swallet yesterday (22nd September 2015). A party of six were all short of breath. By the time they got out, at least one member had a headache and felt sick. It was reported as being very unpleasant, and considered potentially dangerous.

I didn't think the farmer allowed access throughout the summer and autumn months, has this changed now cap'n?

Hi

The air in Cuckoo Cleeves was very bad on 25/09/15 - not really too surprising.

Looks like no-one has visited there in a while given the lack of paths through the nettles and brambles.  Also the padlock has rusted badly and needed quite a bit of fettling to get it open.

Tynings bad this evening two of us on a trip of four suffered quite badly,  we all felt breathless and far more tired on the way out,  although felt a bit better once at the cleaner air near the pitches.

Swildons two. Bad air.! Probably anyway not really experienced it before but it matches the symptoms.

Walked down to sump two and noticed a biological odor sump pool had a thick scum. We went up black hole series and all experienced much shorter breath than expected. One member who already had a cold really struggled. All felt much better back over sump 1 on the at out. Took a while to get better.

Very surprised as not heard problems in swildons before. Lots of people about. Thanks to those who let us past! Did any of Plymouth uni notice anything if there on here?

Subject: Rhino Rift temporary closure

This is to let you all know that Rhino Rift shall be temporarily closed from Mon 8th to Thurs 11th November ? locked with a different padlock ? whilst work takes place to break up the boulders currently blocking the route to the 4th pitch.

As the work is taking place during the week this should cause the minimum amount of inconvenience.

The above email received but I'm currently querying the dates as the day/dates don't match.

Just received the following:

FYI

Due to instability in the entrance series St Cuthbert?s has been closed until work to fix the problem has been carried out.  The is a BEC committee decision, which we have not taken lightly.  It is envisaged that the cave will be open again by Christmas.

Any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

Hannah
