Fairys 2 Survey Trip 2
A few weeks have passed since the last survey trip. Friends have been on expo. A broken Distox2 nearly sent me into frustration orbit. Progress has been delayed. I imagine today is going to be cracking. Last time I was here with Mark Sims, Chris Twigg, Lee Smith and John Cameron I wondered why I felt a bit tired... then remembered I had been twice before that week, so I was hoping today would be a joy!
Underground at 10:30 - I had it all planned out in terms of timings - we should be at the last survey station by 2pm, allowing for messing with bags in via Delarosa and for ciggy breaks.
It was the first time to the Rift formally known as Sump (but will probably always still be called the Sump by cavers) for several of the party, although Chris Curry had been with me before to examine the sump before the breakthrough. I felt excited show friends all the little things I’ve noticed over the years - and to do my full tour guide chats on the way to the sump. Water levels being very low made for steady progress through the stream way. We stopped for a break at the Choir, leaving some food for the return journey. Via Delarosa is never my favourite bit of cave but seeing how Chris was super keen to carry the largest of the bags, it wasn’t so bad. We all gathered at Sarcophagus chamber, the largest of Fairy's chambers and one of the prettiest. Alieen hadn't been before; it’s great to see my friends’ reaction to Northern Dales caves.
I may have been past the sump a few times now since Mark’s magnificent effort, but it’s not at the top of my list of “fun things in Fairyholes”. The rift is deep with crap rock on each side. I think I’ve felt a good foot hold only to find it crumbles, dropping me into deep static water, which feels a little chilly. I was ahead with clear water and again looked down under water on a rock protrusion thinking – yep, I bet that’s what got in the way of Martin Holroyd when he dived it
With the deep part behind us, we all met up at the first chamber. Continuing, it's a great fun watching my friends’ reaction to the stream passage. We all try our best to stick to the same route through the chambers.
The draught in Fairyholes is significant. It’s most felt at the sump and Myers Passage. This is what motivated me and Ian to look up ay Myers as the draught is howling at this point, but the draught in Fairies 2 (beyond the recent breakthrough) remains significant. We opted to survey up the right-hand passage from the previous survey limit, the narrower of the two ways on.
Thermals on I have my usual role of tippex master. Chris is on disto and Pete on the phone. Alieen and Fleur spend some time taking some photos of the passage.
Alieen Looking down the Stream passage.
At the end of our last survey trip we all had a quick look down this passage. The team today ask me what it’s like and how long the passage is. The fact it ends in a boulder choke is about all I can offer.
Survey survey, survey. Cold, cold, cold. This part of the cave is unusual for Fairyholes. Perhaps it’s because the mud banks that lead down to the stream have no prints all over them. They sparkle with some tiny mineral deposit. We are all very excited.
Passing through a large chamber, I think to myself, I never ever thought Fairyholes would hide secrets like this. Sure enough, there looks to be a boulder choke at the end. Alieen and Fleur squirrel around taking pictures and finding the route for the tippex master to follow.
Typex Duty.
Alieen heads through the choke looking a lot more confident than I might have done. After a few seconds there is a slight clatter of stones, Alieen casually says to herself, “I need to remember no one has been here before”, but clearly unperturbed she is quickly through. Finishing off the survey of the chamber I pop out of the boulder choke to see Fleur and Alieen patiently waiting… what’s up?
Alieen looking at the Choke.
Alieen had glimpsed a bit ahead and decided to wait for us all, well mainly me. My friends are very kind with moments like this. Fleur commands that she needs a record of my elation.
This cave will never fail to amaze me - how on earth is there a chamber as big as this so far upstream? Just when we think it’s going to crap out with boulder chokes on the branch with less draught, the branch going into nowhere, the branch with no real streams sinks anywhere near on the surface. You will have to wait to see the survey… I decide to give a boulder kiss much is my joy.
This chamber is wonderful, super-massive, great! And more than any of us could have hoped would be here. I wished I had more eloquent words to describe the chambers other than big, muddy, and boulder strewn. There would appear to be a high level passage - wonderful!
At the far end of the chamber a steam passage flows in. Then something goes a little pear shaped. Fairy 2 is cold, muddy, and awkward in places which has led to technology issues previously. Pete’s phone decides it’s had enough of this torture and gives up the ghost for a minute, flashing green then, deleting all sketches. This was a difficult moment(!), but a plan to re-sketch on the way out was quickly hatched.
Fleur took over sketching whilst Pete and Alieen looked for the survey stations. Chris and I returned to the T junction to check detectors in our rather half arsed attempt at dye testing.
The trip out wasn’t too bad, a steady plod, don’t slip off a boulder due to non-existent feet. Out by 8:30 to be eaten alive by midges.
It’s still going at the end of the right-hand branch. Chris and I had a quick look, although it looked to be getting soggy and low…
