Think about another word for the verb ?to empty?... then ?half?... then ?about?. Does that help at all?

Ha!  Evacuate -> cave + uate. I  think I understand this cryptic business now!

OK what about the about though? Why about half empty? Also, does every clue have to have a cryptic section for the word cave, pot or hole?

Evacuate  in half is evac, turn it about and you get cave.
