To the inviter in the post above this : Thanks, but the trip will probably happen before I've read my book and bought my suits.

If you ask me this is a lot of preparation.  Considering you can go on the roads after a just a weekend motorcycling, if you hold a full license.

Sheesh WMPM

Read Andy Sparrows book by all means  :coffee: but as has already been said, Great Douk is really a leisurly amble through the dark with a bit of crawling at the end and the book won't tell you anything like that!

Get yourself to Bernie's Cafe and hire all the kit you'll need (?11 I think) and go give it a try!  Far better to hire first rather than shell out fro stuff and you find you don't really like it!

My offer still stands and what the heck!  you can even bring your map and compass along to play with, although you can see the trees from the road.

I will inform the pub landlord where I am and when I expect to return, so he can come and get me with his yellow chopper.

I'm staying well clear of that pub landlord

Don't worry about that - you'll learn far quicker from going with someone, so hire what you need and go. You can always  have a second trip by yourself, or explore any of the many other horizontal Yorkshire caves.

Definitely agree. Without starting a prolonged debate on the pros and cons of joining a club, I'm going to be going on a club trip to Great Douk on Sun 21st Oct. You're welcome to come along, even if you haven't finished your book yet.

Thank Skyrmy, I'm ready.  Sick of faffing, and want to get into the cave.  Where's is Bernie's, Chapel?  I don't travel by car, so I'll travel down the day before and get some accomadation in the village. (With me map to find the toilet).  I'll get the gear for two days then meet you : where to meet.

Thanks a lot.

Be careful, it's dark and you may get your feet wet :)

Sorry for the delay.  Physical condition, is not well at the 'mo.  Classed as "OK" on some weight chart, tired a lot though.  Can you PM me please Skrmy, I 'll have to meet up with you in Ingleton.  Can walk and run to the end of my lane without stopping.  I need you to take charge of this mish as your experienced, I'll be there with my map in Ingleton, at some B&B the day before.  I'll hire the equipment the morning before.  If you PM me I'll tell you where I'm from and such, but don't want to use the public forum in case I get invaded by Star Trekkies or something.

I should have some travel money to Yorkshire the week after next.  The whole trip I priced at near ?200, if I arrange some cheaper travel like a bus, I should be ready to go again.   I'm still flabby, but a bit firmer, two weeks of light training (6 circuits maybe) and some walks (3 x 1 hour) for the better.   This seems so long ago I posted here.    The fitness level is still laughable though looking at what I've done.

Some-one said to look at a site, is there much in the way of trips to the Douk at this time of year?  I've been re-modelled in Vista and some new innards now, for the PC - explains the apparent abscence.

5 weeks and 2 days, since beginning to plan this!  Wow.

?200 quid seems a bit steep. Have you priced up the youth hostel? I think it's only marginally dearer (about ?3 extra) if you're not a member.

Having bought two maps, a compass, and been on some practice runs - I've been informed Crackpot in a place called Swaledale is closer.  Not much closer, as it's in Yorkshire. So never mind.  If I bus to Leeds, (?30 maybe) would someone pick me up, and run me to my digs (probably in Ingleton), that of course I will have pre booked.  There I could just about walk to the caving shop and hire the stuff I need the next morn.  Right, so any groups doing the Dales, especially Greak Douk, though it's wet.

Ingleton is a good place to base runs in this area from, isn't it?  Everyone has thick knit sweaters, and white frothy mouths from beer, so it must be.  Yes there's a man in a red cagoule, we're in the right place.

Thanks.

To the above, I joined the YHA, not a lot of people know it's open to non-youths too.  (Which is lucky as I am 10^45 years old.)

Another point (I can't find the edit button), but I wanted to say, how do we predict the level of the river in the cave.  It was raining last week I think, we need the previous few days, and some data.  Chicken and egg, you can't get the data (percipitation levels and water levels in the cave), without going in.

These three links should give you some useful information to go on.....

On site observation is good too!

If you're going to have to go to Ingleton to hire gear (and Ingleton is a good place to do that) then forget Crackpot.
It's too far from any hire place.

Your best bet of getting a lift would be if you were going along with a club meet. You will probably find that, whereas there'll be someone who won't mind you tagging a lift as they drive up to the meet, you'll be less likely to find someone willing to make a special journey to pick you up. Look at other threads on the 'new to caving' area of this forum - you should find links there that will enable you to find links to clubs operating in the area, and most club websites have a list of their forthcoming meets. Caves to look for include Runscar and Thistle (50yds apart near the Ribblehead viaduct), Long Churn, Borrins Moor, Birkwith, Browgill.

If you're caving on your own, use the links above to see how wet it's been recently, and check out a good weather forecast on the day. If you feel it's OK, then still ask at Bernies or Inglesport for advice. Make sure someone knows where you're going, what time you'll be back to a phone, and how to call out cave rescue if you haven't phoned them by the due time.

But it is much safer to go with someone, and if you don't have any caving mates, then a club is a good way to find someone to cave with.
