If you're not in a club, you're not a bona fide caver!

surly, a bona fide caver would be doing it (possibly with a beard also in p v c), not reading this posting o. g.

That's a lot of money to have confiscated, it would be better in your hold baggage I reckon.

Thought you were about to go caving!
I'm bringing my beard to Swildons this afternoon :)
(Why isn't there a bearded smiley on UKC by the way?

Electrical items with batteries in your hold luggage may be identified as part of a bomb...  :(

The paying someone to guide you is surely a red herring... ...climbers pay guides all the time - does this make them any less bona fide? Even on Everest where there is a lot of contention about muppets paying to be "dragged up" I propose that they're still well `ard muppets* and their intention to climb the bugger is just as genuine as those more experienced climbers who have paid a guide simply because with all of the logistics etc involved it makes sense not to have to start from scratch yourself.

Again, I think the club issue is another red herring - being in a club simply makes it easier to prove you're bona fide but has nothing to do with whether you are or not.

If "Someone is really really really keen on caves, passionately enjoys caving and has done loads of trips with plenty of variety...." i would consider them a bone fide caver.
If they chose to pay for a guide because they are not in a club and there are access limitations on the cave they wish to visit then i don't see why this should make them any less bone fide.

For example- I am not in a club, I cave with a bunch of both club and non-club cavers, and have done for many years, mainly in Scotland where access is not usually restricted. however if i wish to cave in England where access is more often restricted then i may need to join a club or pay for a guide.

Joining a cub does not make me any more bone fide than i was before and paying for a guide doesn't make me any less so. however it does prove responsibility to the landowner.

If the only access restriction is that i be a bone fide caver then i would expect to be granted access without joining or paying a guide. however restricions are often more stringent than that.

true..... about 2 months back a some club members accidently took my two mates rope up aswell as there own from garlands pot in giants caven.... dindt take the rop just left it at the top. luckily some one else had rigged another route and they were able to take that. else it would have been a few hours wait... im not saying this is what all clubs are like. but when you have a large group of people who are removing ropes they didnt put down its easy get confused. Luckily....... the other rope was there and as always people knew where they were going and when they'd been out.... or it would have been a different case.....

small groups FTMFW!!1!!
