Upper part of the large chamber at the end of the east branch of Withyhill Cave. Pete Rose and I banged our way into this but never named it. Its off normal tourists routes but we were collecting a steel bar left there some 40 years ago. I cant remember why.

My third image for this week. Not technically perfect but more for fun and a record. Using ELSI ( Extendable Long Selfie Instrument ) at the 20m platform. Actually ELSI was employed to discover a new shaft yesterday on video. ELSI extends to nearly 3m with an adjustable camera socket and clamp for a Skyray torch. Useful for stal areas out of reach and for backlighting just with the torch.

The digging and photography is relentless  :D. This from  "The Friday Nighters" yesterday. Working record view. TG 4 at 12 second, programme. Skyray back ground. Taken using ELSI. The camera viewpoint is in mid air in a shaft looking back into the dig base camp.

My third image for this week. I was pondering what " Showcase " meant and how Chunky wanted that to be represented here. As a verb we have this definition.
" to show the best qualities or parts of something: "

Of course how you further define " best qualities or parts of something " I guess is up to personal understanding. So whilst my photos added here might not be the technically most perfect I like to think that I somehow encompass the idea of " best parts of something ". To show that photography might be part of many things. Of course a visual art but that does not necessarily encompass technical perfection. Certainly a record of unrepeatabale events. ( many " great " images are thus ). A casual record of trips done. Stages in digging a cave as we are certainly losing the caves original form.  Archeology and exploration too. Certainly not to put other photographers from posting images on the forum thinking that they cannot match the expertise of others. So back to my third image which is the best part of something in several ways. First the actual operation of taking the image. This was viewed on a long pole with camera and Skyray attached. Unusually the image is a screenshot from  the video. Using remote video meant that I could choose the composition I wanted when running it frame by frame. I then used iTop Screenshop to capture it finally running it through Photoshop to increase the resolution and lighten the shadow. Now the other thing is that nobody living has ever seen this view. In fact until I reviewed the video nobody knew that the big shaft actually existed. ( Looking up to a beam and cap ). I dont think that anyone will get to see this view anytime soon either so for the moment the view is unique and the area unexplored.  I guess that alone makes it quite  " interesting " and in my view worthy of the term " best part of something ". Additionally TG camera video greatly reduces backscatter so the process stated here can have its uses for very quick results. That brings me to the final definition. " Fun ". We dont have to be too serious with our cave photography chasing the perfect image and agonising over the results. Its a broad spectrum. We do what we choose to do but as long as we enjoy doing what we do than thats what really counts. Just checked my 2022 saved caving related image file. 588 photos there so I must be enjoying myself. Finally. Another little word " share ". Some may say I share too much and certainly some share too little. My view is that anything shared adds to its value. Lets have a few more on the forum please.

Is that wood? Having just spent eighteen months bringing rotten wood out of a cave might I ask why on earth people think it's OK to put it into caves in the first place?
