Rescue in Thailand

I have no idea of the relative contribution to the cave stream by alllogenic water, but apparently "Over the past week several major sources of water leading into Tham Luang Cave have been diverted, but authorities have stressed that it is impossible to block all water sources."

90 divers are involved:- 40 Thai and 50 from the rest of the world.

There was an interesting piece on this morning's BBC R4 BH programme where BBC Journo Hugh Sykes recounted his experience as the victim in a practise rescue from Swildon's ..er.. pothole  :-

Hugh's bit starts from 7:20 as they lose the line to Thailand. After Hugh's piece they get the line back to Thailand you can hear the rain crashing down.

Hats off to ALL involved in the rescue attempt which is underway again today.  I think reading between the headlines we all know that the main rescue thrust is being carried out by a small group of very skilled cave divers working under incredibly difficult conditions not just in the cave but within the circus of such a huge international rescue effort.  Many cavers will know these guys or their families and friends who are waiting at home.  I'm thinking of you all and have positive thoughts for successful outcomes.

Call it preemptive but I for one am singing 'They're going home, they're going home. The Thi kids are going home' Much better than the current song. I dearly hope I am right with that song, with them all rescued it would make me far happier than any world cup win.

Congratulations so far to all helping there.

 The only depressing side of this is that Holywood is probably already planning a film
with well known actors showing how America saved them.

This one has really good graphics, with proper cave surveys (courtesy of SMCC) and funny "cross-sections" that pop up as you go along the cave. And good pics from inside the cave too.

They still refer to " spare oxygen tanks ". That might well be correct at depths less than 10m though in fact it might mean the same old media rubbish about " oxygen tanks ". In any case there is still a contradiction as spare " air tanks " are also mentioned.

I do hope that it is all concluded successfully today and that when the film is made they get the nomenclature correct .

Over and out.

Has there been any meaningful contribution from the US caving world? So far all I have noticed has been some fanciful ideas from Elon Musk, a couple of Hollywood producers touting for potential stories for a film, and a meaningless tweet from Trump.

Yea like they captured the Enigma Machine and Brad Pitt's tank routed the Germans. Not to mention " Saving Private Ryan ". Hardly a Brit in sight.

As I understand it some are diving on air (Thai Navy Seals) and some are using oxygen rebreathers (UK contingent) so it is little wonder that the press get confused and refer both to air tanks and oxygen tanks.  Anyway, they are nearly all out now  :)
