Caving and filming legend Sid Perou has sadly passed away after a few weeks in hospital in Thailand.
Unfortunately a planned visit by my wife and I to visit him in Chiang Mai has had to be cancelled.
I’ll no doubt see him in that great cave in the sky in the not too distant future.
RIP Sid.

From his FB page yesterday:
"Hi all, Martin Perou here - Sid's eldest son.

We're heartbroken to share that our amazing Daddy passed away in San Kampheang Hospital this morning at approximately 12:30pm Thai time. 6:30am UK time.

As many of you know, Dad leaves behind a huge legacy in the Caving world.

To us, he was an amazing Dad/Husband/Grandad/Brother who supported us through the most difficult of times. From a personal point of view, he was absolutely amazing following the death of my Mum Alison from Cancer, in 1996.

We have pulled together some photos below from various chapters of his life. If anyone has any fond memories of photos of him, please share them in the comments.

His funeral will be in Thailand on Thursday 18th July 2024, but we will also be celebrating his life in the UK. I'll share the details of that when it's arranged."

Sad news indeed.
Although I never had the privilege to meet Sid in person, I spent quite a bit of time in email contact with him in the run-up to the CDG 75th Anniversary dinner.
Sid delivered a highly entertaining after-dinner speech by prerecorded video in which he recounted the filming of his incredible series "Cave Diving Story". His presentation included some previously unseen archive footage and also acted as a motivator to produce an update to the series, which he released last year.
Sid's work has doubtless motivated several generations of cavers and I'm sure it will continue to do so from his incredible archive on YouTube

Watching his films on TV when I started caving is still a vivid memory especially when you compare the equipment available then as compared to now. I'm sure he was responsible for many taking up caving. RIP.

Watching 'Beneath the Pennines' just around the time I was seriously getting into it was absolutely what caving was all about. Worn out wetsuits with yellow tape and Oldham lamps will forever be associated in my mind with the fantastic caves of the Dales. RIP Sid, you inspired many to get out and explore.

Back in (IIRC) 2000, Andy Sparrow was premiering his "Rock and a Hard Place" film wot I was in and there was a display in Priddy Village Hall before the film was being shown to the Pridderati et al; I was stood by one of the display tables where there was the dolly/tripod stuff we used and some bloke came up and I explained what things were and how we used them as he seemed quite interested. Afterwards Les Williams told me I'd just patronised Sid Perou about how to make cave movies. I consider this to be one of my greatest achievements. Sid didn't let on about his legendary status and it speaks highly of his modesty. I wonder how many hundreds of cavers were inspired by his films.

I'll never forget a carry to Far Country for Sid's filming of the GG to Ingleborough Cave dive connection. A real gentleman and legend. RIP
