Steve Backshall caving & diving

I think SB and BG are as bad as each other. It's possible to make interesting TV by explaining the right way rather than demonstrating the wrong way. It's probably the producers' idea but they should refuse to do it.

I spent a day climbing with Steve Backshall in Langdale several years ago. It was pissing it down, and he was well out of his comfort zone, but his enthusiasm was totally genuine. He seemed like a decent chap anyway - he bought me lunch so he must be ;-)

Everything I’ve ever heard about BG on the other hand suggests he’s a grade A nob.

It's worth remembering that these TV personalities are people too, with bills to pay and families to feed. Producing TV shows is their profession and source of income.

At many points in my professional life, I've had to keep my head down and go along with the whim of my employer, even though I have had good reason to object. As my wife pointed out, it's generally not worth jeopardising your job and putting your family at risk by making a fuss about something, even if you are right and your employer is wrong.

There are obviously lines that I wouldn't cross, but now I have family dependants, I am quicker to swallow my pride and just go along with what my employer wants.

As have I - but I didn't have a my own public profile that I was damaging.
