I young schoolgirl friend of mine was trapped for half an hour in the reverse of the lower picture in 1970, with I understand, her head and upper body protruding and her hips jammed solidly. There were about ten cavers outside, but it took a considerable effort to extract her. (I say "I understand" because I could not see. I was trapped inside Llygad Llwchwr with only another school girl for company.)

I was going through my collection of obscure underground mine photos when I came across this surface photo from 1971. There is plenty of context from the surroundings to identify the well known site so it should not be too difficult. (It features the girl trapped in LL with me.)

I am surprised this is still hanging around. Time for a clue, here is what it was like in 1971.
Our old friend in the shed persisted in locking the steel door to the main level. If what he claimed about the stuff he had found had been true, this might have been justified. Instead it was an inconvenience. I was not going to get any favours from him as having reminded him he only had a right to minerals in the first couple of hundred metres of the level had frightened him. My attempts to reassure him that we did not mind him picking up stuff from deeper areas where we had leased mineral rights, as our exploration target was millions of tons of low grade ore, did not reassure him. So to access our part of the mine we sometimes visited on a Sunday and went in through Level Zero at the river, my wife and I climbing up the pipes to reach the main level a few tens of metres from the front door. More often we used a distant long cross cut to reach a higher part of the mine.

Other names are:
Llechfraith Adit
West Clogau mine
Clogau No. 1 Level.
The distant cross cut was Ty.n y Cornell, which at the time was open behind a rusty sheet of corrugated steel. I regret never making the through trip between them, but at the time my attention was focused on the geology.
