“Mines of the Gwydyr Forest” by John Bennett & Robert W. Vernon (1989-1997)

A series of seven books.

The Gwydyr Forest in North Wales is a fabulous place to explore. It is rich in history and has many attractions from the rather obvious abundance of woodland to (hollow) mountains, lakes, and of course, it’s prolific mining history. To suggest that there may be “one or two” holes inside of Gwydyr would be a colossal understatement.  Imagine your car full of frogspawn where each individual black dot represents a mine, adit or passage – now you are getting the picture.

This series of seven publications represents a mind-boggling account of every mine that did, does or even could exist within the bounds of the forest. The detail is quite extra-ordinary with very specific company names, dates, (copy) reports and, of course, the history that surrounds every hole to be found. Pull out maps, plans, cross sections and photographs complete this work providing the reader with nothing less than a splendid account of absolutely everything you could possibly want to know surrounding the mines, mining and history of the Gwydyr Forest.

All the favourites are detailed here  including the fabulous Pandora mine (noted for its mineral splendour and, conversely, its drainage level running into Lake Geirionydd where no submarine life can exist),  Aberllyn Mine (the mine of greater beauty) and Parc Mine (with its still visible vein of fool’s gold). The list goes on and on ….

No doubt this was a very significant undertaking and the work put in by the authors is clearly nothing less than completely marvellous.

A true tome of mining wealth for any intrepid explorer.

 :)

Ian

Couldn't agree more. A great series of books with all the detail you could wish on a fascinating area.

Available from Mike Moore at moorebooks.

Agree with OP - essential reading if you want to visit Gwydyr. And access is OK for most of the mines thanks to Cave Access Ltd.
