Thanks SeeJay - from that link I may have found a way to contact the bloke directly so I can send a real cheque. (I hate using internet payments.)

Mrs T: if you don't want to support the bloke then don't - but I'd like to. The Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is a good cause and this fella's trying to do something positive for it. I'll also take great delight in depriving Alistair Darling of the tax I've had to pay when I earned my donation.

What's a "chugger"?

I think all us taxpayers made plenty of donations to Ben because he used to claim benefits on the basis that he was an "unemployed volunteer worker" (i.e. he was too busy digging to have a job)! What a star he was . . . .

Don't let my conceit stop you Pitters, it's a free country and all that.  I just think they could have done something more useful - either with respect to caving or to medicine, social care, whetever.

Take your point about spongeing cavers.  I think the old Toscanini comment on Richard Strauss applies.

I think this guy is quite a long way from being a paid charity mugger, he's doing something intensely personal, outside his comfort zone in support of a charity that's helping his friend.  I've done the same in the past, so I'll be supporting him.

Justgiving.com claims the gift aid tax back by the way (although they do take a small commission for running the website and processing the payments and claims).

... and charge a monthly fee whether anyone has donated or not.
I'm not a complete idiot: some parts are missing!

Best try and get him to a £1000 in less than a month then.

Chris is currently invading North Yorkshire with a group of lively young lads, in his day job as a youth worker. He is not a chugger but he is a caver.
I'm sure all the comments on here we're well intended really, as why shouldn't he do something which raises money for a good cause and is non-detrimental to anyone or any environment? Would you say 'The thousands of runners who do the London Marathon for charity don't benefit the needy or running'? It also seems a little aloof to suggest that they might not have considered what impact they might have in the cave.
He tells me the camp went well, although they did it in Giants in the end due to prevailing conditions and only 6 of them could make the change of date. They took books, food, water etc. none of which made much of an apperance as they spent the whole time talking crap! Sounds like an average sort of a trip to me  :beer2:
Gift-aided donations can still be made at the just giving link above!

George

:clap2: £738.00 to date, a good effort, nearly there,
Couple of quid from anyone on here that hasn't made a donation would help him get his 1k

Ian - the method of contacting him I tried failed.

Can anyone else out there give us a clue about how to get a donation to him / his cause by cheque?

Hi George, and all fellow cavers from the UK and abroad!! To send a small donation without paying online (although the site seems pretty bomber with regards security) post a cheque payable to Weston Park Cancer Charity to:

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity
48 Hours of Night
Whitham Road
Sheffield
South Yorkshire
S10 2SJ

Thanks guys for whatever donation you feel appropriate!! We left the cave just as we found it!! And thanks for a cool weekend George with our lively young people :)

Plus guys, the website should you prefer to donate there is:

http://www.justgiving.com/48hoursofnight

where payments go direct to the charity plus gift aid if you are a taxpayer!!

Chris

Great - OK, I just put a cheque in an envelope for you (together with a gift aid declaration).

I'm well impressed with the efforts you lads have gone to; best of luck reaching your target - and beyond?
