    Meregill: Above the canyon

On a quick evening trip to the bottom of the Canyon today, spotted a rope going up at the end of the Canyon roof traverse. Didn't bother having a proper look up, but it definitely went up at least 5m or so. Anyone know where it goes/who put it there/how old the rope or hangers are? Also, some...

    The Mereless Gill

An after work trip today found me down Meregill, to have a look at the non existent lake! I know it has been mentioned on here before by a few people but it really is a sight to see. Dropped down off the fallen tree, which is actually still alive and has leaves and buds currently, I landed next...

    Quaking pot

Quakings reputation precedes it. So it was with some trepidation that three of us set off from Storrs common towards Ingleborough. The other two had been to the crux and back a month before but it was my first time in this infamous pot. At Crina Bottom we ran into Martin H, a CRO DC, and he...

    Great Douk names

Do any of the areas/sections of Great Douk have actual officially recognised names? There are some distinctive features which seem like they could have names, but I could only find a source for names in Stephen Oldfields three peaks blog, with other references online linking the names back to this.

    Meregill deviation

On the topo there is a deviation marked on the lower second pitch route. On a trip yesterday several of us looked for the bolt, but couldn’t find it. We spotted the deviation for the higher route (or at least we think we did, it would have created some catastrophic rope rub to use it for our...

    The Masongill Traverse

This trip was conceived a while ago, when I decided I wanted a good journey through a cave. I settled on Masongill, as I hadn’t explored several parts of this wonderful system, and had chatted to Dave Ramsay at work about his many explorations in the system. I settled on Large to Ireby, as...

    Ye olden days cave names

I’ve recently read through a couple of older publications about the caves in Yorkshire, the first being “A tour of the caves in the environs of Ingleborough and Settle" By John Hutton, published in 1780. The second was "Cave Hunting" By William Boyd Dawkins (who was a mate of John Birkbeck)...

Jingling pot, no not that one

I was checking out a map of the lakes, and spotted Jingling pot on the map, south of Shap on Hardendale fell. The satellite shows a very inviting shake hole and I was wondering if there was any more information on it, northern caves and CNCC were dead ends, mostly due to Jingling being a popular...

    Goyden pot blockage

On a trip today with my dad in Goydon, and we were forced to abandon a round trip due to a huge plug of flood debris blocking the entrance end of Cap Left crawl. Looked like it could take some effort to dig out. Also contained a multitude of pheasant corpses, so mind the smell!
