Adit/Cave Search

Im an average Caver that I fall back onto doing mainly in the Winter. There are some Locations that annoy me, regarding finding adits, above Matlock Bath on the opposite side to High Tor. The most annoying one is possibly Torhills/Primrose. I looked at old maps and the top entrance looks almost certain to be a few meters below the Path at the top end of a rake but having jumped down into the rake there is only really small openings that are either collapsed or are not the entrance. As for the lower one i have thrashed about looking but it has eluded me twice. Another annoying one is Shining Cliff Cave which has a grid reference on the peak caving site that is in a field that shows no sign of it whatsoever. A few meters at the top of a ridge behind the stone border wall looks possible but even that is well choked up. Also of note is that it is even listed on google maps but if you click on it , you are taken to Shinning Cliffs Cave in Ambergate Woods which is several miles away. Any accurate info on these would be great.

Torhills Cave / Primrose Mine is much easier to find from below. From Dale Road, if f I remember rightly, there is a gap in a wall where you can walk into an old quarry. You have to head right up a slope over boulders and tree trunks. Can't recall precise location, but the first isn't too far away in a cliff. The 2nd entrance is higher up, so keep following an ill-defined path. The entrance has a bold step over a drop to reach. Be careful not to rely on dead trees to help you up on the traverse to reach it. Both entrances are in crags and can't imagine them being easily blocked off. Hope that helps with that one.

Yes i was in that area where there appears to be a working area and i did indeed go up the moss covered old steps but it was very hard to find an adit in there despite it being Winter. May have another look as i didnt venture to high in that area as it was very dodgy underfoot. If its a bit towards the cliff bottoms then maybe i was looking in the wrong place but its fair to say I had a decent mooch around but didnt really climb up towards the right hand corner.

You definitely have to scramble up the slope on the right, over the boulders and fallen trunks etc to reach the entrances. As you say it's not easy to underfoot! Once you've found the lower entrance, the upper entrance is easier to find from with the mine. Good luck!

If you had Lidar Goggles this is how Primrose Mine looks from High Tor. It's a necky climb down from the opencut but if you go 75m north it's a bit easier to get down.

That is an interesting image and defo clears up the location problem. This map is difficult to judge down on foot, from the path .

I do come across the occasional incorrect Grid Reference and would usually contact the appropriate admin. Groaning Tor was an example up until recently, but has since been corrected on the Peak Caving Site as it initially sent me on a wild goose chase through the undergrowth, ignoring an obvious defined path !
