Bernie's Closed

This seemed to be the pattern of my life for so many years except I avoided the 'pleasures' of van life by kipping in my car (or under the viaduct arch just above the nearby road).
Under the top arch of the viaduct - slept there many a time. Keep meaning to pop up and have a look but never get around to it. It always seemed the perfect doss. Sort of place if I was homeless I'd live at. Anyone been there recently?

It must be 30 years at least since I dossed there. If I'm remembering correctly the ground was bare and dry but there was a bit of a slope and it could be draughty. In the eighties I was the 'lucky' owner of a Leyland Princess. Although it was a heavy rust bucket it had quite a spacious back seat for sleeping on. I remember sleeping in the carpark of the New Inn at Clapham once with the backdoor open and being woken by the rain hitting my face.

I now live in Settle, so the other cafes are closer... and I'm no longer a student, so I don't faff around in a cafe until midday anymore! These days I have breakfast at home / at a caving hut and try to get underground by 10am :) I'm sure I'll frequent Inglesport cafe every now and then when friends are visiting.

Inglesport is the main caving cafe, but if I'm going out for breakfast / lunch as a local I'd probably go for one of the cafes/tearooms I mentioned, because I prefer the food and vibes there, and they are places I'm more likely to comfortably curl up with a book. It's a matter of personal preference. Back when I was a student, I hadn't even tried any of the other options, and we borrowed our helmets from Inglesport too so it was always convenient to stick to Ingleton. Especially because all the other places I mentioned are a much longer drive from the farm.
Thanks - I didnt mean to pry! I was just wondering if something had changed with Inglesport to make you less likely to go there - I haven't been there for about 5 years. Again, nothing to do with Inglesport, I haven't been to a cafe in the area for that period.

In case it has relevance (it might not) my own quote based on decades of experience is "You can make money out of caving but you can't make money out of cavers".

Likewise customers with short arms and deep pockets!

I occasionally feel a bit bad about being a compulsive cheapskate, but frankly, I need to look after my own finances first.

If I deprive a caving equipment manufacturer or supplier of some trade by fixing my oversuit, or buying secondhand, so be it. If my cost-saving actions and those of other like-minded cavers force a business to close, we might regret that, but not as much as I'd regret having my house repossessed because I spent too much on things I didn't need.

As for the café breakfast, it's a nice treat, once in a while, but to my mind it is an unnecessary waste of money, that I indulge in about once a year at most.

Morning mods - Can we move the more recent posts to a new thread - something along the lines of 'Bernie's is no longer open' ? ;)

Moderator comment: Done.

Inglesport is spenny! And their veggie options are a little lacking. It being above a caving shop is a definite plus though
Their veggie/vegan options are getting better, though there's always room for improvement. The village in general is pretty much behind the times in that department, with a growing market that most establishments don't seem to want to tap into. Nuts, considering its a tourist village with a lot of competition.

But people may be allergic to nuts ;)

Far more veggie options than the good old days of egg and chips for breakfast in the Fountain (the veggie breakfast was a plate of beans and tinned tomatoes with a couple of fried eggs floating on top) and chips, peas & curry sauce from the chippy at the A65 garage on the way home.

I think when you're younger you take it all for granted that things will carry on the same.
Still the case when you're old. I've lost count of the number of restaurants I've wanted to try, and which have closed before I got round to going.

I remember visiting the- I think it was the barn? Cafe in Malham after a trip in Pikedaw and being served beans in toast by Pete Livesey.

That would be the Old Barn Cafe, run by Soma and (the late) Pete Livesey. We were regulars there for several years when the Malham cave diving project was in full swing. Pete was always interested to receive updates on progress. Soma used to try out her new baking experiments on us before they were put on sale - they were always delicious! Their standard carrot cake was the best I ever had. Pete was an amazing bloke; he left us far too soon.
