Personal request: please, please, please put a proper vegan fry-up on the menu.

I pity them, rather than think poorly of vegans; last week in a posh coffee shop in town I saw a scrummy slice of caramel cake but didn't notice it was vegan; half a fork was all that got consumed before I took it (politely) back to the counter so they could "check it was cooked properly as it was inedible". It was cooked properly. It was inedible. I was informed it was vegan. I think it went into the bin as none of the counter staff took up my offer to help themselves to what was left. £4 mistake.

The yoga studio I go to have a vegan cafe. Bedtime cakes I've had in years.

I'm not a big cake eater but I'd there as they are awesome

The self-same coffee shop has no difficulties producing excellent cake(s) which aren't vegan. Just sayin'.
Perhaps because the principal ingredients giving cake its flavour and texture are eggs and butter? :unsure:

Unless of course it's a lardy cake (which my good wife happens to be making right now :giggle: ), but I've never seen a lardy cake as far north as Bernies.

I prefer vegan cakes. I tend to find them more moist / less dry than non-vegan ones. Perhaps because there is less rise without the egg so they are more 'stodgy', but I prefer that texture.

My partner is vegan and never has a problem getting decent cake thats vegan. In fact she will make some which are always very good. Vegan just means you are not using dairy or eggs .
It'll be the dairy and eggs that make a cake work for me. Vegan's deffo not my cuppa T.

Most baking for cakes is done using something like Stork - which happens to be dairy free (vegan). Not many bakers use real butter due to the prices anyway so you wouldn’t be having dairy in your cake anyway!

As for eggs, there are so many substitutes which you wouldn’t be able to tell if you had egg or something else in your cake.

It’s better to judge each bake individually than just what you think the ingredients should and shouldn’t be.

The individual slice of vegan cake I bought was inedible; therefore to be on the safe side I shall refrain from purchasing vegan cake again.

Gluten-free is the worst. Dismal stuff. I don’t buy cakes and tarts, easy enough to make and taste better. I will buy them when in France from a patisserie, they have pride in their work and you pay for it.

At the other end of the scale we just had prob the finest sunday lunch ever at the Black Swan in Ravenstonedale. 5*.

Gluten-free can be done well, there used to be a shop at Eyam Hall that did cookies we bought for a coeliac friend and I was happy to eat them too - unfortunately the lady who ran it got fed up with the workload and shut down. However, Iagree that there's a lot of stuff now that's gluten-free and taste-free as well...

What exactly is in a vegan fry up? Mushrooms and tomatoes but seems to be missing all the best bits of a fry up
If I make one for myself I will do:
- Vegan sausages
- Scrambled tofu
- Mushrooms
- Tomatoes
I usually don't bother finding a substitute for bacon but sometimes add slices of avocado instead

or sometimes I scrap the concept of a fry up altogether and if I want a 'cooked breakfast' go for shakshuka (I am technically vegetarian so will usually have eggs with this but it's easy to do a vegan version too)
