For good historical reasons CNCC will only issues permits to BCA member clubs. They do not issue permits to individuals.

However, clubs may apply for a permit which can then be passed over for use by non-members of that club, unless I'm mistaken.

Really? I would have thought that permits were non-transferable.

You are mistaken. CNCC permits are not transferable. If a club decides it can not visit the cave then the permit should be returned to the permit secretary and definitely not offered to another club - I'm sure it's in the CNCC website somewhere....

Direct from the CNCC website:

Aims & Objects
  • To ensure and maintain access to caves and potholes by negotiation and or agreements with farmers, landowners or authorities.
  • To secure and maintain good relations, and act as general co-ordinating body between cavers and farmers, landowners, gamekeepers, local residents and other interested parties.
  • To encourage and educate cavers to respect and conserve caves and the countryside.
  • To represent the general interests of member clubs and northern cavers.
  • To act as general disciplinary body and arbitrator in the event of any act considered detrimental to the Council as a whole.

But surely to god,
an organization like The C.N.C.C. should aim to help all cavers?

So Whitelackington is right. It does (well, at least northern ones)

If the C.N.C.C. is there to represent Northern Cavers does that not mean
issue permits to them :-\

Does Northern Cavers, just refer to those born up North or could it mean Southerners who have affiliated to CNCC :-\

CNCC: Council of Northern Caving Clubs, NOT, cavers per se.
CNCC issues permits to BCA member clubs, we don't care anymore where they were born or currently live...

Thanks for clearing that up - my misunderstanding! - I got that impression from reading the CNCC January 07 minutes on the website which mentioned a non-club caver's trip to Pool Sink being done under a permit from BCC.

The minutes report that someone was asked to confirm that they were a member of BCC at the time of the trip, which they were.

Copied from minutes:

[size=8pt]PRESENT: Glenn Jones (LUG), Les Sykes (LUG), Bernard Bond (BCC), Geoff
Barber (PP), Roy Holmes (DHSS/CRO), F. Hartley (no club), S. Beck (BCC), M.
Hale (BSC/CRO), J. Sloane (LUG), J. Altringham (CPC), D. Hodgson (CPC), S.
Lieberman (RRCPC)

MATTERS ARISING FROM THE LAST MINUTES:
LS asked F. Hartley if the trip her group was on in Pool Sink was a BCC
permit. F. Hartley confirmed that it was.

I guess the minutes are inaccurate re the "no club" comment. BTW this is only an observation of mine, not a criticism - it just looks from reading the minutes as though non club members can actually get hold of permits which is what this thread is studying at the moment - however, thanks for clearing up the false impression I've got from reading them.

You really had to have been there... and I can see why you thought what you thought. The permit was for a trip the previous October, when the person concerned was a BCC member. In January, the person had not rejoined BCC at the time, hence "no club", however the person has now renewed membership to BCC, as I said, you had to have been there. If the minutes recorded everything that goes on at a CNCC meeting, they would be extremely funny, possibly slanderous, and very, very long....

Glenn, mate, you nearly got us all to turn up, but you blew it with those last three words.  ;)
