I have been really pleased to see that this 'ugly bug'  :ras: has not knocked the spirit of the people who celebrate the dawning of the day.  ;D ;D

If you want to while away the hours to confirm all is not lost in the world try "How many Morris Dancers are on Facebook?"  :bounce:

Happy Beltane everyone  :)
an accidental release from the lab in Wuhan, where they were studying similar virus, is one of the two (though lesser of the 2) likely sources of the outbreak. What is not in doubt, is that the Chinese initially covered up the outbreak, allowing it to spread worldwide.

Would a western democracy have been much quicker, or would the bureaucrats have insisted on evidence to establish the problem was real? I doubt if we would have reacted much more quickly. Perhaps a week or two faster, but not the 4-6 weeks that would have been needed to make a real difference. Whether it came from a lab or a bat, once it was established in a big city with worldwide links, I doubt if one could have made much difference.

All the actual science I have seen suggests that the virus jumped the species barrier in the usual way (i.e. by accident against the odds with a collection of bits you would never expect to work) rather than having been engineered to do so.

I can't find the original tweet but I don't think it was Viz - although they've put some crackers up too.

Glad you liked it - in these times one needs a laugh.

Following the clarity from our great leader this evening, heres one for the vulnerable over 70's

I think there should be some relaxation towards attendance at funerals.
Currently our local crematorium has a limit of ten people inside.
They did have loudspeakers relaying the service outside but have now stopped that - after I'd invited 12 people.

Yes, this seems a particularly cruel rule. A colleague of mine was recently unable to visit his dying grandmother or attend the funeral due to the 10 person limit. He instead had to watch it on an internet live-stream from the crematorium.

We were fortunate enough to be allowed to visit my grandfather the day he died as he didn't have covid symptoms and his room was next to the fire escape in the care home so they were able to let us straight in without walking through the rest of the home. He had requested a direct cremation, so there was no funeral to miss either. Once this is all over and we can meet in larger groups, his ashes will be buried with my grandmother.
At least there is no real rush with this part...

My parents are both in their early eighties, and have been very active at their local church for their whole lives - it's the central focus, what with choir, social functions, etc. They've also attended a lot of funerals, as the average age of the membership is old. Now they can't go, and as they're catholic, this is the first time in their lives that they've missed mass - not once, but every time for weeks now. They're smart enough to know they won't be punished in the eternal fires for this transgression, but their social life has pretty much collapsed now, and they won't be able to attend any more funerals - possibly until their own. They don't want to risk it, and they have a big garden, so are doing reasonably well.

But if they get seriously ill now, from anything else, we could be in trouble, as I won't be able to help really without risking more infection - I don't drive, so would have to use the bus to get there. I have other siblings who live closer who could, but it's a weird feeling being 'banned' from getting on a bus when it's only 15 miles away and the only way I can see them - obviously I can't get a lift from anyone!
