Grim smell in West Kingsdale Master Cave

On a trip today we were heading for a wade through the canals that lead to the Rowten sumps. We stepped out of the stream at the Master Junction and turned right and immediately met a wall of the odour of death. I thought it might be sewage-based but my companion thought dead animal. We tried to press on and get past it and back to the water but it got worse so we ran away.

There was no smell in the master cave, but we did get a whiff as we went up the passage towards Swinsto Great Aven; maybe there's a connecting bedding plane there or something.

Would be interested to know what the cause is if anyone braves it :)

There is a dead sheep on a gravel ledge just upstream from the Simpsons/Swinsto crawl.

Fairly unpleasant smell! But cleared up after heading further up Rowten Passage.
