Hunters Hole: problems with anchors

Fine, then we agree to disagree. I have seen 'trial by forum' elsewhere, and it is not pleasant, and can cause a great deal of aggravation. Fortunately, the vast majority of people posting here are mature sensible people, but it only needs one spoiler to come on board.....

I disagree with Peter in that I don't think it needs to be discussed behind closed doors/privately, as the bolt issue affected all of us and we were all concerned for our safety. It is basicly a 'public matter' as we the caving public use the bolts and I would prefer to have all the information rather then just know 'something' was being discussed behind closed doors which could affect my safety. I prefer the open more transparent discussion of the forum, even if I only had read access and the people involved posted reports, that helps with peoples confidence in the caving systems we have.

I think everybody now agrees that there were no problem with the bolts (except the one in Rhino's). Bob Mehew has had the balls to come out and admit that the problem was with the testing which he trained the guys on Mendip to do.
It is now safe to use these bolts and I cannot see any reason to discuss this further. What does it achieve?? The caves are open again and everyone can use them. There obviously won't be a problem in the future because they will not be tested with a machine again. The whole point of not discussing it on here is so that people don't get blamed for what was a temporary situation.
We should all forget it and get on with what we all love doing....caving.

I don't believe for one second that people on this forum would have had the patience to read the 450+ emails I had on this topic - and if they had been open to public scrutiny the resulting threads would have taken a year to read.

:clap2:

Pull the other one! - it's got bells on....

Over and over and over again I/we had feedback from cavers saying "Why can't we decide whether or not we want to trust a bolt?"... - i.e. not much concern at all!

Correct statement, wrong conclusion.

The conclusion you should draw is - Don't patronise us, we're grown adults who know what we are doing.  :ras:

;)

In which case DP should have written "as the bolt issue affected all of us and we were only interested in dangling on string".

Sounds like the Hubble Mirror to me...

Everyone worked their bollocks off doing what they believed or had been shown was right:
After the event an error showed up in the method; it was discussed with the benefit of hindsight, the problem was identified and everyone made aware.
Surely this is simply one to chalk up to experience and to move on from, can't see that anyone has done anything wrong here.

Doubtful.

I reckon if Hammy or Ecowaller revisit RR they'll make repeat observations about the amount of play exhibited by the bolts. Be careful not to cry wolf - checked bolts may still have problems cropping up.

No just a progress report, somewhere from the CSCC a locked topic from the C&A officer.  Maybe I missed it, I remember seeing a post saying all caves with bolts locked then lots of discussion but no authoritative progress report. Thats all its just an idea. SO when someone in the discussion says, whats going on, they are pointed to the locked, easy to read (discussion elsewhere) at a glance progress report. Thats all.

It took me 12 hours to drive from Glasgow to Chippenham Friday.
I got a new phone today.
