1) I've start removing rocks from the flooded sections of Knotlow. If you're down there, can people not throw rocks back in to the water from the bottom of Waterfall chamber.

2) the last couple of dive trips i've done down there ( going back some months) there has been a rope hanging down to the bottom of Waterfall Chamber from the Mecanno passage link.
Its a yellow/black rope with no end markings. Attached to the anchors using alloy carabiners that are starting to corrode badly. carabiners have no tape coding.
Is this someone's project or can it be removed?

I take it you mean you are working in the flooded continuation of the 210? I had been led to believe this had been pumped out many years ago to a conclusion. However, some new passage here could prove quite interesting...

Wasn't this pumped out in the late '60's/ early'70's by PDMHS to recover the rag & chain pump that is in the museum, or is my Alzeimers acting up? ( I keep forgetting I've got it).

BSA Bulletin (New Series) 8 (1973) pp8-12.
(Good article with survey and photographs when pumped out.)

A superb scale model of the rag and chain pump was in the TSG HQ for many years (and may still be?).

Shall I /We re-rig with stainless maillons. I have a couple to spare (it makes Meccano soooo accessible  (y).)
Jon & I could probably do it this week ( are you reading this Jon? )

A word of warning. A few years ago, when I was inspecting a couple of loose bolts at the Chain Passage rebelay in the 210 for Jules (they turned out to be non-DCA ones: a Fixe with minimal movement and a Goujon which just needed tightening), I also replaced two badly rusted delta maillons on the Meccano belay with two stainless maillons thinking that folk must use them for a pull through. They only lasted a fortnight or so before they were pinched.

I know who put the rope in and have dropped him an email (copied to Cave Troll) suggesting that he removes the rope. Meccano is very accessible from both ends (and its reputation is far worse than the actuality). It's easy enough to arrange an exchange from any of the three entrances in Whalfe, and, if you do it via Whalfe Engine and the 210, you don't even need two teams! So I can't see that a permanent fixed rope is really justified IMHO.

i'm diving the pump series that was indeed pumped in early 70s.
The water level was dropped but there were three "pools" which were presumably continuations of passage / shafts that they didn't pump enough to empty.

there are also a couple of places where the survey does not match what is actually there

This is making for an interesting read... Have you any ideas where the  unsurveyed passage may lead to??
Hope you don't mind me asking but does anyone know if the end of east level sough is still open? After all this rain the stope to the right that I dug through last year (I think) may be very unstable or may have already slumped.  If anyone heads that way, be careful.

Just a note on the rigged rope. I wiped off most of the corroded gunk on monday to see if i could see any identifying tape. So don't look at them and say "what corrosion?" :)

My experience of placing SS maillons ,as Al points out, is that they "disappear" very quickly ! "Cavers" (!!!) often even remove the SS hangers from goujons.

I believe Chuck Hooley was involved in the PDMHS pumping of the 210 pool, you may be able to get info "from the horses mouth".
