New Look UK Caving!

Thanks for bearing with us while we get the new upgrade running. I'm pleased to say it's all gone smoothly so far!

Clearly the look and feel has changed and hopefully you will be able to find your way around the new layout. Most things are reasonably self explanatory. Here's an overview of the bigger changes and known quirks...
  • Your Profile
Your avatar should have transferred however the new forum is able to handle a higher quality version so you might want to re-upload it again (or change it). In a similar manor to Facebook you can also add a banner to the header of your profile. Just click on your username at the top right then click on your name again in the pop-up box.
  • Media
There is now a dedicated section for media (from the main menu). We hope this will be a better place to store photos and videos rather than them getting lost in the main forum. It also displays in a gallery form. There are already some categories to see how it goes such as the "Photos showcase". You can view and comment on photos too. Once a few people have added some to this we'll review how well it's working and make changes as required. In addition to the pre-set categories, you can also add a personal album.
  • Uploading Photos
The photo uploader is now far better! You can upload up to 10 files with larger limits than before and you now have the ability to place images in any part of your post as well as re-size them in a more intuitive way. You can still add images from an external source but there is now much less need to do so.
  • Post Likes
Unfortunately it has not been possible to transfer over the 'likes' from the old forum so it's a fresh start on that. However there are now more choices such as love, haha, sad and angry.
  • Mobile Friendly
The site is now fully mobile friendly so you can use the normal site on your phone or tablet. We've had to remove Tapatalk I'm afraid as it's not supported by this system.
  • Video
Similar to the old forum, if you post a YouTube (or similar) link to a post, it will automatically embed (show the video rather than just the link). However, any old ones will not show up as videos (just the link). The solution to this is very manual so the mods will be sorting out some of the more recent posts to correct them over the coming weeks.
Although the forum can handle uploading of videos directly, we've chosen to turn that off due to the huge amount of server recourses it uses. It might be something that we look at in the future.
We will continue to make tweaks along the way and are happy to listen to feedback. Hope you enjoy the upgrade!

Brill. Well done Q. I notice the Fing Hopeless videos are all embedded. Did you do that? Thanks

Yes, it was a good test thread. For mods, it's just a case of clicking edit then save and it should sort it's self out.
The old stuff in FileRun should all work and you can login to that as before if you want to use it.

Well, it all seems to work, which is by no means a given in any migration, so well done for that...

One question: I used to have this link as a bookmark: ukcaving.com/board/index.php?action=unread
Am I right in thinking "What's new" is the modern equivalent? Or is that just posts made in the last 24 hours?
And from the 'action=unread' page, there was a 'Mark all as read' button, which I used to find handy: after reading the threads I wanted, I could just put the rest to sleep, so to speak. Is there an equivalent now?

ok, I've spotted it now - under Forums > Mark Forums read

Edit: And having done that, 'New posts' shows nothing, whereas 'What's new' still has posts, though marked as read.
So New posts is what I want, I was just thrown before as all posts seemed to be new after migration. Got it now :)

Question for Q - are folks able to modify a post after they have posted, they could before for a few minutes?

Right now I'm going to see if uploading photos is easier - I hadn't been able to from my mobile for a while now, here goes.....

Sorry not caving but is of limestone :ROFLMAO:

Nice job folks. I used to run a few large forums back in 2010-2015 and migrated them all to XenForo. One of the best software suites going, although I am aware - not cheap! You will most definitely enjoy the quality of life improvements it brings. Sadly my forums have gone to the waste-side, a sad reality of old gaming forums.

I've been unable to open the new UK Caving all evening, but based on Facebook posts, it was clearly live.

It would seem that the basic parental controls we have on the home wifi have blocked it, as I have only been able to access the new site from my phone by switching off wifi and using mobile data (circumventing the aforementioned controls). If I reconnect to the wifi it stops again, while other sites still work.

I'm not sure why the forum is now classed alongside gambling, booze or porn sites, but this seems like a bit of a problem that could do with looking into.

Works for me. I've updated my Avatar - fortunately it was a timely need as I have a new car too!

Did you see a screen from your ISP telling you it was blocked? If not what happened when you tried to access the site? What error exactly - server not found?

I'd think that it's more likely that during the changeover some DNS records were changed and your router cached them. If so this should fix itself when the cache expires.

Well, I've tried clearing my browser cache and still getting the same problem. Assume this will have the same affect as waiting for it to expire on its own.
